A FEW MONTHS LATER
-MELOKUHLE DERRICK BESS
“I miss you”
I say to Yaya, she’s supposed to land today. She was asked to be a judge at some art convention whatever where there were a couple of artists showcasing their work and there was money to be won. With age these are the little things she attends and she enjoys them. Mom is currently with Iyana and she’s ok with the grandkids and what not I guess but we keep in touch. Asemahle is working on producing her last film and then she retires completely. I on the other hand am working on handing our family legacy over to my sons. Kyle has proven just how deserving he is but then again so has Yanga. Ever since he married Macella I am proud to call him my son. I am happy that he’s stepped up and working very hard to provide for his little family. Aya is also happily married, I couldn’t be happier with the man she chose to marry because he treats her right.
“I miss you more. What are you doing? What are you planning on doing today?”
she asks and I chuckle
“Well, I am planning on surprising my wife with a nice dinner wearing nothing but an apron”
She giggles
“And then what else?”
She asks
“And then we are going to enjoy a nice meal and then I’m going to have her for dessert”
She screams making me laugh
“Bess! I can't wait to get home. Feels good having the house to ourselves”
She says and I laugh
“Yeah it does hone. It really does, no kids, sex everywhere, anytime”
I say and we both laugh
“Tell me you love me”
I say
“how about I show you when I get home”
She challenges, I sigh
“But I want to hear you tell me you love me”
I complain
“Bess I have to go. I will see you when I land ok?”
She says and I laugh
“Fine, run. You’ll tell me eventually”
I say and she chuckles
“Bye Bess”
She says
“Bye Mrs Bess”
I say and then we end the call. I make my way out of the room to chill in the lounge when Miso walks in
“Hey son”
I greet him
“Hey dad, how are you?”
he asks and I shrug
“I’m alive and well, sup with you?”
I ask him as he throws himself on the couch
“I’m ok dad. So I’ve been talking to Roland”
He starts of, I raise an eyebrow in anticipation
“Ok?”
I ask
“Well I was thinking of changing my course and doing IT or Computer Science”
I chuckle because this person is doing his last year and shouldn’t even be thinking of changing his course, and with his internship I don’t know what the hell crawled up his ass. I sit up because the words ‘I’m kidding’ haven’t left his lips as of yet
“What are you saying?”
I ask him
“I’m saying that I’m thinking of changing my course”
He repeats it and I laugh, not because he’s a joker
“You are in your final year and you doing your internship in Land Surveying. It doesn’t make any sense that you would want to change your course now”
I say and he shrugs
“Yeah but it's not what I want to do”
I chuckle
“After 3 whole years and now in your forth you’ve finally woken up and decided that, you know what this is not the course you want to do? What the hell is wrong with you Misokuhle?”
I ask him because I am failing to understand him
“Dad it's really not that deep”
He says and I chuckle
“With whose money again? Misokuhle we have spend thousands on you and now you going to tell me that changing your course and starting from scratch in another course is not that deep? Have you even spoken to your mother about this decision you want to take?”
he shakes his head. I chuckle
“Dad come on, Land surveying is not what I want to do. Maybe you came out of high school knowing what you wanted to be but some of us didn’t. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and watching Roland do what he does is so cool. Dad please, you don’t know how difficult it is to grow up under the Bess shadow”
He says and I chuckle
“You think I just woke up one day and decided that I was going to study law? Boy don’t tell me shit about that. I was raised and groomed to study law. I grew up under the shadow of the greatest lawyer there ever was and I had to live up to that. You are fortunate to study what you want. You are an ungrateful brat that doesn’t know what the hell he wants to do with his life. You think I don’t understand what it's like? Fuck outta here with that nonsense”
I say to him unable to control my anger. I swear these kids find a way to mess with my peace because just when I think everything is going right and going good they find a way to mess that shit up.
“I’m changing my course dad.”
he says and then he walks out. I chuckle in disbelief because he did not just speak to me like that. I decide to get up and head on out to run a couple of errands. My first stop is the bank

-MISOKUHLE BESS
I don’t think parents understand the pressure of wanting to be successful, of wanting to have to live up to them. Parents don’t understand the pressure they put on us because all of a sudden we have to study so hard that we reach their level of studying. Both my parents own that red gown with a red beret, Kyle recently got his and Yanga is on his way to getting one, Aya and Macella are also working on wearing the red graduation gown so I’m literally feeling like the black sheep of the family right now. It's not what I want for myself because honestly nowadays I feel like it doesn’t matter what graduation gown you wear, fact is that there are no jobs in the world for anyone. Instead we just wasting our time in school  when we could be working on building something for our future children. But then again I am standing at an advantaged point of view because whether I study or I don’t I still have a trust fund to take care of me. I walk inside the restaurant, I’m meeting up with Buttercup
“you look like shiit”
She says the minute I sit down after we’ve greeted each other
“I know. How are you? How’s work?”
I ask her while hailing for a waiter
“I’m good. Work’s good. How are you? How’s school?”
She asks me
“I’m quitting”
I say quietly
“I’m sorry what?”
She asks, not that she didn’t hear me
“I’m dropping out. Land surveying is not for me”
I repeat
“since when? How do your parents even feel about you quitting?”
She asks me and I shrug
“Dad and I had an argument just this morning about it. I haven’t told mom yet”
I explain and she looks at me as if waiting for me to say I’m pulling her leg or something
“and if you quit what are you going to study? You already in your last year doing your Internship”
She reminds me and I roll my eyes as the waiter takes my order then walks away
“I know. I’m thinking of studying IT, Aya’s husband has been teaching me a thing or two”
I say and really Roland has been teaching me a few tricks and trades
“IT though?”
She asks with a confused expression
“LS is boring Buttercup. I also want to do something I will enjoy doing like you and the rest of my siblings”
I say and she continues to ask me more questions trying to understand me and where all this is coming from
“Bubbles why don’t you finish your Internship and then study IT when you’ve secured a job?”
She asks
“Buttercup I…”
I don’t finish talking when my phone rings and it's Aya, I excuse myself and answer Aya’s call
“Sup?”
I ask her
“Dad has been shot in a bank robbery. He’s at the hospital”
