A melodic laugh filled his ears, it was teasing, so close yet so far away.

"You can't catch me!" the voice called out.

His blueberry eyes searched for the other, he peeked her head behind the bookshelf, surprised when he found nothing but dust and scattered piles of old books.

"I'm sure his voice was coming from there," he mumbled to himself.

"I'm not there silly!" suddenly the voice was behind him, he turned, but revealed nothing.

"Tadashi? Come on, I want to see you," he pleaded.

The laugh filled the silent void once more, he felt his heart begin to race.

"I'm right here," a whisper in his ear, it felt like a cold blow, shivers ran down his spine.

He turned again, his eyes widened and a smile spreading across his face.

"Tadashi..."

"I've missed that smile, it's been a while since I've seen it," Yamaguchi said with a sigh. He leant forward and smirked at him.

"Hm, Tobio? It's unusual to see you at this hour," he pointed out, turning to reach under a hidden compartment in the bookcase, pulling out a dusty box, containing intricately made chess pieces.

Kageyama was amazed how Yamaguchi's hands didn't leave any prints in the thick layer dust resting on top.

"I'm still waiting for an answer, my love,"

A deep blush filled Kageyama's cheeks at the last two words, "I-I...it's been difficult lately to sneak away from my parents."

Yamaguchi walked, well, somewhat floated to a nearby wooden table. His feet never did actually touch the floor. Kageyama followed suit and sat opposite to Yamaguchi.

"Yes, well, as the firstborn heir, I'm sure you have many preparations. The King and Queen wouldn't want their son constantly hanging out in some old 'haunted' library," Yamaguchi reminded, chuckling quietly to himself.

"I don't care what they think. I love coming here,"

Yamaguchi hummed and finished setting up the game of chess, all the pieces still covered in a thin grime, built up from years of no usage.

"The other servants and I would often play chess, it'd be late at night, even early morning hours. Huddled together in our small room, the room only dimly illuminated by a dying candle. Of course, what we used to play with were nowhere near as good quality like this, merely scrap items we'd find in the palace and gardens," Yamaguchi reminisced with a small smile.

Kageyama listened carefully to every word, he loved hearing Yamaguchi's soothing voice, even though it sounded different, it sounded more like echo's.

Many thought Kageyama was crazy. Falling in love with a servant, obviously not acceptable as Prince. But, he didn't care what everyone thought of him, he loved Yamaguchi, and Yamaguchi loved him.

"Play some chess with me? Tobio?" Yamaguchi snapped him out of his lovestruck daze. He nodded hastily.

And so, they played.

It had been several months since they had last seen each other, the game wasn't serious, mostly just enjoying each other's company.

Smiles, winks, blushes.

Yamaguchi leaned forward, so close, his mouth right next to Kageyama's ear.

"Checkmate. I win." he pulled back with a smirk, leaving Kageyama bewildered.

"Wha? When? How? I thought your king was all the way over there!" Kageyama questioned.

He laughed, "Looks like someone wasn't paying attention."

"Well, sorry that I was more interested in you. The love of my life is more interesting than chess."

Yamaguchi's smile faltered slightly, he leant back and sighed.

"You're forgetting again, aren't you?"

His dark eyebrows furrowed together in confusion, "Forgetting what?"

"That I'm dead."

The raven's smile dropped and he looked down, "Damnit Tadashi. Really had to bring the mood down," he forced out through clenched teeth.

His chin wobbled and tears pooled in the corners of his eyes. It's true. He had forgotten. But seeing Yamaguchi's ghost, interacting with him so naturally, it was easy to do so.

"Hey, hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. I just...you need to remember, I'm not alive anymore. I was crushed by a bookshelf falling on me, and now, I'm stuck in this library. Your the only one who can see me."

Kageyama looked up, wondering why Yamaguchi's voice was fading. His ghost was blurring, becoming less apparent. He reached out, tried to grab onto him, but his hands captured nothing by a cold gust of air.

Tears fell down his cheeks, "Tadashi! Come back!"

An opake hand reached out from the disappearing figure and caressed his cheek. Although, it wasn't a physical touch, just a cold bite, one you might feel when walking outside in the harsh winter.

Yamaguchi smiled gently at him before he faded completely. Desperate and in pain, Kageyama reached out, trying to grasp onto any remainder of his love. Being forced to remember the truth.

The truth hurts.

It hurts so bad.

Yamaguchi Tadashi was a ghost.

Simple as that.

Yamaguchi Tadashi was dead.

Simple as that.

So why was it so hard to accept?

Why did it hurt so much when he was reminded of what he lost?

Why couldn't he just enjoy it a little while longer?

Why couldn't he touch him?

Hug him?

Hold his hand?

Kiss him...one last time?

It's all he asks.
