HARDIN.

I wait patiently in the parking lot, tapping my left foot up and down in anxiety. What the fuck is taking her so long? Did he hurt her? Is that why she wanted me to pick her up? I knew this was going to happen. I fucking knew it.

I begin to tap my fingers onto the steering wheel, dancing them across the curve of the wheel as if it was a piano.

I checked out of my hotel this morning. I've been staying at the house, getting it ready for Tessa's arrival. Auden is asleep in the backseat because I refused to leave him at the house alone. I don't fucking care if that fucker is dead, I'm not going to make the same mistake again. From now on, no one is allowed in that house alone unless if I'm there. It'll be easy since I work in the basement.

I might even move my workplace up into the living room so I can watch the front door, and the windows like a hawk. No one is going to break into my house ever fucking again, I'll be sure of it.

It's around 6:30 PM, Emery called me at maybe 6:00. I got here five minutes ago and she still hasn't come out.

I swear I'm going to fucking march in there and destroy that Cole kid if she doesn't come out within the next five— no two, minutes.

I look away from the hotel doors and look back to Auden who has his cheek pressed to his seatbelt as a pillow. He's very tired. It took an hour to get back from Landon's and I went straight to the hospital so he could see his mum. Her bruises were healed, but I can imagine his stress when he saw her in that bed. Now he's mentally exhausted. He needs this nap.

I jump when the passenger door opens and Emery is getting into the car flinging her backpack into the back seat. "Watch it." I scold, looking back to see if Auden is still asleep.

"He'll live." She replies with a stone cold expression.

"What the fuck happened? What'd he do?" I lean over so I can get a look at her face, using my hand to move her chin. She swats me away.

"Dad, stop! Nothing happened. Not everyone is like Robby." She growls and I'm taken back by her sudden outburst. She never talks about Robby.

"He didn't do anything? Then why are you wanting me to take you home?"

"Why are you interrogating me about this? Is it a crime to want to spend time with family?" She asks defensively, crossing her arms and staring out the window.

I'm not going to get anything from her, I know I'm not. "No it's not." I say, rolling my eyes and putting the car in reverse. That's definitely not why.

EMERY.

I keep my eyes looking out of the window, my fist holding my chin up. "I didn't know you picked up Auden." I mutter monotone, not feeling the need to really emphasize my words. I don't feel the need to do anything anymore. That feeling will go away though.
