TESSA.

Knock knock.—

I plaster a huge smile on my face, quickly glancing to my side to check if Hardin has the same expression but, of course, he wears his signature unwelcoming poker face. I roll my eyes lightly as I elbow him, my smile growing bigger to make up for his rudeness and that's when the woman at the door speaks.

"Oh look at these! They look delicious." She cheers, referencing to the cookie-bag in my hands.

"We're just here to welcome you to our neighborhood. I just finished baking them." I say, nudging Hardin to speak up.

"Yeah," he quickly says, and it takes everything in me not to look over and glare at him.

"Oh! You two can come in." The young woman offers, fortunately oblivious to Hardin's unwelcoming behavior. She lets us pass her, and we enter her kind, warm home. It still looks pretty bare, but that makes sense since they moved in just yesterday.

We move to their couch, and from the corner of my eye I see Hardin shift uncomfortably before hesitantly sitting beside me on their couch. I knew he didn't want to come with me, but I used his "we can do whatever you want." comment he told me earlier against him. I had planned on having Emery come with me, but that backfired and I didn't want to go alone. Because whether I love talking to people or not, it's a bit strange handing out fresh cookies and walking into our stranger-neighbor's home.

"Look Barry, they brought us cookies!" The woman cheers, and I note that her husband's name is Barry.

Barry simply nods, going back to his news paper, leaning back in the recliner chair. At least Hardin isn't the only one being rude. I can't help but think I've seen Barry before. He looks oddly familiar...

The woman let out a small squeal, opening the bag and pulling out a fresh cookie. "They smell delicious."

"They're chocolate chips, and I also used some left over m&ms in a few." I explain.

"She's Tessa. I'm Hardin." Hardin speaks up, and I nod. I just now realized I never introduced myself.

"Im Kelly, and this is Barry. We have a son upstairs—" she sits up, her tongue darting out to lick her lips before shouting, "Cole!" Hardin and I both jump at the sudden change of volume.

A brown haired boy, the one I saw checking the mail, pops his head out from a door that I assume leads to the basement. Maybe his room is down there? "Yeah, mom?" A hint of realization covers his face, and he inches himself out from behind the door.

"This is Tessa and Hardin! They brought cookies! Your favorite." She smiles and he sticks his hand into the bag.

"Hi, Cole. I have a daughter around your age. Maybe you guys could meet and she could show you around." I suggest, and I feel Hardin shift in his seat, his elbow hitting mine rather roughly. I look over to find he has a very clear face of disgust. I roll my eyes, ignoring his behavior.
