Beka’s POV-

I woke up late the next day. From the sun trajectory; it was around midday. I was still exhausted, even though I had slept for nearly twenty four hours. I was still lying amongst the daisies in the small clearing, and I sat up, hugging my knees to my chest, staring out over the horizon.  It was beautiful, like always, but I felt incredibly alone. I used to take my youngest brother, Elijah, to the highest point in the kingdom to watch the sunset over the horizon, when it was just the two of us. He would have loved to see this. I sighed longingly to just have my family near.

A loud snap of a twig, sounded behind me. I whipped around, with a gasp, to the source of the sound. In amongst the tree branches stood a boy, my aged, wearing the royal blue servant’s uniform, with blonde-brown hair, and dark coloured eyes. He seemed shock to see me, sitting in the grass, so I was guessing he wasn’t expecting me here, meaning none of the royal family had sent him to find me.

“Oh…I apologise Madame. I didn’t mean to startle you. I wasn’t expecting you to be here.” I smiled at him, and he walked over to me, extending a hand. “I'm Joshua Devine, but you can call me Josh.” He said shaking my hand, as I placed mine into his.

"Nice to meet you Josh, I'm Rebekah Wynters, but you can call me Beka."

"You're the girl from the executions yesterday, aren't you?"

My body slouched. "Is it that obvious?" I said returning my eyes back to the horizon.

"Well you're the first person who's been pardoned from an execution in years. You're the talk of the town, Beka."

"Oh..." I said sadly, giving him a forced smile.

"If you don't mind me asking, what actually happened?"

"It's a long story, you might want to take a seat." I said, patting the ground next to me. Josh smiled, and took upon my offer.

"Well, it all started with the church’s bell toll..."

-

"And that lead us here, sitting in the grass, talking for hours...-oh my goodness! We've be talking for hours. Shouldn't you be getting back to work, you're going to be in so much trouble. I'm so sorry Josh."

Josh laughed, and I gave him an odd look. "What is so funny?" I said smiling, he had an adorable laugh, it was one of those laughs that were contagious, and I found myself letting out a small giggle.

"I don't actually work here, Beka.” His jaw tightened. Whatever he was about to say was going to be hard for him. “I'm an orphan, like you, but my parents died in a fire that destroyed our house when I was eight. Growing up, I became good friends with the King's sons, and I'd be here so frequently that I considered Simon as another father to me. I was playing tag with the princes when Simon came outside, and told me the news. He asked me if I wanted to be adopted into the family, because he had considered me as a son. I agreed, and I am forever thankful of him, and there's no way I could ever repay him, so I began to work with the servants and doing jobs around the castle that were in need of completing, and I've done the same thing for ten years."

"Wow...that's quite a story you've got there." I said, stunned to silence.

"The same to you, Beka, but can I ask something, and you have to promise not to take offense to this?" I nodded, curiously. "When was the last time you bathed?"

I laughed, actually thinking about his question. "The day I found the Middlemist flower, that night, I guess. Would you be so kind as to showing me the way back to the castle, I kind of ran into the garden last night, not really concentrating on my direction?"

Josh nodded happily, standing and pulling me up with him, and hooking my arm around his. "It would be my honour, my lady."

As we walk back through the garden, the two of us began to talk about embarrassing moments in our lifetime. I knew what Josh was doing, and that was trying to get my mind and thoughts away from my parents. Josh was a very funny young man; I liked him… a lot, and it was working...mainly because I was letting it. I couldn't help but laugh at his many stories, and in no time we were entering the same door that I had left through yesterday. King Simon and his boys were sitting at the dining room table, eating lunch, when we walked into the room. The Princes' expressions brightened upon my arrival, and I stiffened upon seeing them. Josh patted my hand, and my muscles relaxed.

I was still a bit hesitant with the royal family. Even though it wasn't their fault for the passing of my family, I just couldn't help but hold some blame against them.

"Joshua…Rebekah. Where have you been? We've been looking for hours for the both of you." King Simon smiled with relief. My eye twitched slightly. I hated people calling me by my full name, it was just and subconscious habit.

"I apologise your majesties. Beka and I began to talk when I found her alone in the garden. I guess we just lost track of time." Josh said smiling at me. I thanked him mentally for shortening my name.

"No troubles. Please, join us for lunch." the King smiled, gesturing towards the two available seats at the end of the table. Josh agreed and sat down, next to Prince Niall. Niall smiled at Josh brightly.

"I don't mean to sound so bold, but I haven't bathed in at least two days, and I'm not particularly hungry."

The boys laughed, and the King gave me an amused smile. "Of course, my child." the King clapped his hands twice and tall, slender girl, around her early twenties, came into the room, wearing the servant’s uniform.

"Helena, this is Lady Wynters. She is now in full residence here, until further notice. You will be her servicewoman, and she is requesting to bathe. Would you please show her to her room and also give her a change of gown." Helena bowed her head, obeying his orders.

"That won't be necessary, your highness. I don't need a servicewoman." I said, shaking my head.

"Don't be silly. I’m only trying my best to make it up to you." I sighed; giving in.

Helena began to lead me out of the room, when King Simon spoke again. "Oh and Helena, give her a thorough pampering."
