To date, there is no clear answer as to what causes endometriosis. Several factors may be contributing to its development:

- Retrograde menstruation: blood flows in the opposite direction, from the uterus to the pelvic organs, where endometrial cells can grow.

- Heredity: research shows that there may be a genetic predisposition to endometriosis.

- Metaplasia: one tissue turns into another. For example, endometrial cells replace peritoneal cells and are rejected undergoing the same expulsion during menstruation as they do in the uterus.

- Immune and endocrine disorders are also factors to consider.

- Repeated pregnancies, childbirth, and long-term breastfeeding are known to reduce the risk of developing endometriosis.
