The first day of your menstruation is the first day of a new menstrual cycle. What's happening inside your body today?
Your endometrium, the lining of your uterus, begins to shed. Before menstruation, this layer was growing thick and soft to prepare for a possible pregnancy.
Now it is shedding because pregnancy hasn't occurred. As the endometrium sheds, small blood vessels tear which causes bleeding. After a while, the bleeding will stop, and the uterus will start building a new lining.Reviewed By: Jennifer Lincoln, MD
