Veronica's POV
"I-I'm scared.."

He spun around and started hugging me.

He's never hugged me like this before.

When everyone left for the night I was all alone in my hospital room. My aunt had work so she couldn't spend the night with me. I woke up in the middle of the night because of another nightmare.

No!

I need Jacob!

It's probably too late to call him!

I texted him until he went to school. I felt so bad keeping him awake all night. When I was allowed to leave the hospital, I decided to surprise him. My aunt and Lakelyn picked me up.

"Hey!"

I hugged Lake.

"Does he know anything?"

"I almost said something. My parents caught me before I did."

We got in the car and my aunt started driving.

"Do you have a plan?"

"How bad do you think the game is gonna be?"

"Depends. I forgot who they're playing."

"Did the jersey come?"

"Yeah. It's in your room. I washed it for you too."

"Thank you."

When I got home I ran up to my room and showered. I started getting ready while my hair was drying. When it was dried I put it in a high ponytail. I put the jersey on and looked at myself in the mirror.

Hm.

I kinda look good.

At the field I couldn't wait until the end of the game to surprise him.

"Where are you going?!"

"I think I see him!"

I ran over to people wearing out school's colors and started looking.

Johnson: number 1

No that's not him.

Rodriquez: number 20

One number off.

Where are you?

Irwin: number 7

Shit!

Wait.

Isn't that Lee?

I slowly walked up to him.

"Hey! You're outta the hospital!"

"Yeah! I went home not long ago! Where is he?"

"He's by Austin."

He pointed to where Austin was.

"Looks like Austin saw you."

"Ooo you should record him! That'd be funny!"

"On it."

He grabbed his phone and started recording.

"Want me to get him?"

"If you want."

"YO WINTERS!"

"Ow my ears!"

"Sorry!"

Turn around!

"WINTERS!"

"I'm talking to coach and Austin!"

"Oh! So you don't wanna talk to me?!"

"Oh ha ha. Who's imitating my girl?"

"No one!"

"Ronnie's in the hospital still!"

"No I'm not!"

He turned around. I started running up to him. I jumped into his arms. My arms went around his neck and my legs went around his waist. He automatically wrapped his arms around me.

"Baby?! Holy shit! Holy crap! When did you get back?!"

"Not long ago."

"You just love surprising me don't you?"

"A bit yeah."

He chuckled. I put my legs down then he put my feet on the ground. I kissed him and he started scanning my body.

"You look much better! Y-you're not pale anymore! You look healthy finally!"

I smiled.

"You're hair is up! You've never done that before!"

"Eh. I figured I'd be different for once."

"Look at you in your jersey!"

I turned around.

"Holy shit! You put my last name on it?! Wait...this is my number too!"

I turned to face him.

"You're adorable. You know that?"

"No. Not really. I'm still learning the meaning of words. I assume that's a good thing?"

"Yeah. It is."

He smiled at me.

"There you are!"

"I told you, I saw him!"

"Did you know about this Lyn?"

"Oh yeah! I've been keeping it to myself for like a few weeks now."

"You've kept this a secret for a few weeks? Wow. I'm surprised."

"Hey the cheer captain Kat wants you to watch us and see if you're interested still."

"R-really?"

"Yeah."

"Hey that might be fun for you!"

I gulped.

"B-but look at those girls."

"What about them?"

"They're so pretty.."

"Do you remember what I told you the first time you said this?"

"Yes, they might be pretty on the outside but on the inside they could be ugly."

"Hey maybe you can get another friend or two."

"You'll keep an eye on her, yeah?"

"Yep. I'll watch for any red flags."

"What are those?"

"Basically warning signs something bad is gonna happen."

"If you don't know what to look for you'll end up getting hurt."

"Few things to keep in mind though. Don't take any drinks for anybody."

"What if it's from you?"

"That's different. Take your drink with you wherever you go. If you forget it you might as well get another."

"Oh no drinking or drugs."

"H-how come you're telling me what my aunt already has?"

"I didn't know she talked to you about this."

"It's probably best if you stay away from parties at random people's houses."

"O-okay."

"If anyone ESPECIALLY guys make you uncomfortable or make you feel unsafe find me, my sister, or one of my friends. Or if they're around find one of my parents."

"W-what if I'm scared? What if you get mad at me?"

"I won't get mad at you for something that you didn't ask for. The other team is here. You should go sit down. I'll see you in a bit."
