Chapter 15: Bad NewsRene POV
Was my eyes playing tricks on me? Did the note really say "devil"? I stared at it again, the bold letters unmistakable. Was this what Makenna had been hinting at all along? Were these vampires somehow connected to him, his minions? I couldn't dwell on these thoughts now.
"Rene?" Aries' voice broke through my thoughts, his cold hands on my shoulder. I wanted to look at him, but my eyes remained fixed on the paper.
"Rene, are you hurt? What happened in here?" His concern was palpable as he squatted down to my eye level, gently lifting my chin to meet his gaze.
"Devil," I whispered, still clutching the note. Aries took it from my hands and read it silently, his lips forming a tight line.
"Are you sure it wasn't a vampire?" he asked after a moment.
"I don't think so. It sounded too evil, too demonic, even though it seemed like a woman at first," I replied, unsure but trying to make sense of everything. Aries nodded, his expression troubled. I hadn't seen vampires look worried before—usually, they were the predators, invincible.
"If this is what I think, then yes, we should be worried. Rene, I need you to tell me exactly what happened, every detail. I need to be sure my theory is correct."
Could I relive those terrifying moments, recount them to Aries?
"It's my fault," I sobbed against his shoulder.
"Shh... No, it's not," he reassured me, his voice gentle but firm. Just then, a door opened, followed by the sound of breaking glass. I turned to see Sherry and Janice standing there, their faces a mix of shock and horror.
"Oh gosh!" Janice gasped, her eyes wide with concern.
"Rene, gosh, are you okay, dear?" Sherry rushed towards me, her concern palpable. "No. It's my fault," I began, but Aries cut in firmly, "No, Rene. It's not your fault. Stop thinking that."
I shook my head, tears streaming down my cheeks. "How? I watched her die, Aries! I didn't do anything to try to save her. Her blood is on my hands!" The weight of guilt pressed down on me, suffocating.
Sherry placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, and I looked at her, hoping for some solace. "Dear, I don't think there was anything you could have done. Makenna gave her life to keep you safe," Sherry said gently. But no matter what anyone said, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was responsible.
Suddenly, someone hugged me from behind, and I turned to see Janice, tears streaming down her face. "Rene," she cried, her voice breaking. I hugged her back tightly, our sorrow mingling in the silence of the room. We sat there together, crying, finding solace in each other's presence.
After a while, Aries got up, taking the note with him. "I need to gather something important," he said, directing Sherry to stay with us. "We'll talk more, I promise."
Sherry left the room, giving us some space, though I knew her keen vampire senses would allow her to monitor us from outside. Janice broke the heavy silence, her voice trembling with fear. "Why would a vampire do something like this to a helpless old woman?"
"This wasn't a vampire. It sounded so evil, dark, and angry. I've never heard anything like it," I replied honestly, still haunted by the malevolent presence I had sensed.
"Then what was it?" Janice pressed, her eyes wide with apprehension.
"I don't know," I admitted reluctantly, not wanting to admit the possibility of something so sinister.
