Chapter 40: Here and GoneRene's P.O.V.
I jogged up to the room that Sherry, Janice, and I had been in earlier, my lungs burning with each step. The guard trailed behind me but kept his distance. Once inside, I quickly scanned the room to ensure I was alone.
The guard looked at me and walked inside the room, staying by the door without moving a muscle.
"I know Aries is questioning you. I'd prefer you not to tell him, please," I said to the guard. To my surprise, he nodded. Well! That was a miracle. "Thanks, I appreciate it," I said.
I left the guard where he was standing and went to sit on the couch, my mind racing with thoughts of what I saw. Who was she? Friend? Friend with benefits? Ex-girlfriend? Or a secret lover? Why did they kiss? Did Aries like her? I growled in frustration. Just when I thought things between us were going okay.
I remembered making a move on him, and he seemed fine with it. Though it didn't last long. Was it too much, or was it because of this lady? More frustration invaded my mind. If only I had his power. All this thinking was giving me a headache. I laid my aching head down on the end of the couch and began to doze off.
Knock. Knock. My ears picked up a noise in my sleep. Knock, knock. Again. The knocks were soft. I groaned, getting off the couch, regretting sleeping there as my back protested. With my feet shuffling toward the door, I called out, "Who's there?"
"It's me," Jack replied. Mentally, I groaned to myself. Great, now I had Jack to deal with again.
"He can come in," I said to the guard, who nodded and opened the door. There was Jack, standing there with two cups in his hands.
"I brought some chamomile tea," Jack said, looking into my eyes. I glanced at the cup and then back at him. I sighed.
"Come on in," I said, and he entered. Jack walked in, setting the cups down on the counter carefully, then turned to me. He walked to the couch to sit and get comfortable. He turned back to me, looking at me. I walked to the couch to sit beside him.
I didn't look at him or smile or anything; I just stared off at what was in front of me.
"Rene, I'm sorry for how I acted towards you. I really didn't mean to upset you like that," he started to say, but I continued to stare at the wall. He touched my arm, making me look at him. His eyes looked worried.
"The things I said," he carefully and slowly continued, pausing. He waited to see if I would react. "They were kind of harsh. I should've said something better than that. I'm sorry I upset you. I guess I can be a little bit of an ass."
"Little, huh?" I questioned him as I finally turned to him.
"Okay, maybe more than a little. I guarantee it comes from a place of caring. I'm just tired of seeing people die," he said, shaking his head.
I agreed with Jack on that part. I was tired of it too. Jack had been here for a long time and had probably seen a lot of human demise. What would it take to change that? Not all of them were cold-blooded. Could they be? Maybe they didn't have to be cruel physically; they could be awful mentally and emotionally too. My eyes started to become watery, and I turned my head away from Jack's face.
"Rene? Are you crying? Your eyes look sad," he said.
A sigh escaped my lips. Why did Jack have to notice me right now?
"I'm fine," I said to him.
"No, you're not. Look at me," he demanded. Stubbornly, I kept my face turned away. Jack reached for my chin and gently turned my face toward him. Just then, a tear rolled down my cheek.
