Chapter 24: So It Begins

Rene POV

"I can take her." Jaince said. I rolled my eyes at her thinking she could. I pulled her hand and she let me as we ran. I looked back at Karla seeing her still standing there smiling her creepy smiles. I know she was toying with us.
"Rene, I got an idea. Hop on back and I'll carry you." I didn't reject her idea and climb on her back as she uses her vampire speed. Everything around me was a blur. Jaince stopped and set me down.
"We lost her." she says.

We were in some kinda tiny storage place with no light above us. I went up to the door to listen, but didn't hear nothing.
"I hope." I say.

"C'mon Rene, did you see how fast I am?" Janice started posing while flexing her small biceps muscles. She may be fast and strong, but Karla is older though.
"Maybe" I turn to her.
"What's her deal?" Janice asked.
"That's Karla."  Janice eyes widens and her face set in shock and anger. Whatever she's thinking, I hope she doesn't do anything crazy.
"She was the one killed Nina? Stay here and I'll deal with her." Janice states.
I grabbed her arm, my voice low but urgent.
"Janice, don't. We don't know what we're dealing with here. Karla's not someone you can just confront head-on."

Janice's eyes flared with anger, but she hesitated. "I know she's dangerous, but I can't just let her get away. Not after what she did."

I took a deep breath, trying to calm the rising tension. "I understand how you feel, but if you go after her recklessly, you could get yourself killed.

Janice's voice was a low growl, her determination radiating from every word. "If she does anything to you, I've got your back."

I met her gaze, feeling a surge of gratitude. "Thanks, but I don't want you getting hurt because of me."

A warm smile spread across Janice's face. "You're my best friend, Rene. We've been through so much together. I'm here for you, no matter what."

I couldn't help but smile back. How did I ever get so lucky to have a friend like her?

Suddenly, the sound of clicking heels echoed through the hallway, growing louder with each step. One word came to mind: Karla. Her footsteps were slow, deliberate, and accompanied by a haunting tune that sent shivers down my spine.

"You can hide all you like, but I'll never lose a game of hide and seek," she sang, her voice dripping with malice. The eerie melody abruptly ceased, and the silence that followed was suffocating.

"Is she gone?" I whispered, my heart pounding in my chest.

Without warning, the door was wrenched from its hinges. Karla stood in the doorway, her gaze locked on me with chilling intent.

She lunged forward, and I was frozen with fear. Just as her hand reached out, Janice sprang into action, intercepting Karla with a fierce growl.

"Annoying pest," Karla hissed, her eyes narrowing at Janice.

"Leave my friend alone, and maybe you'll be in one piece," Janice snarled.

Karla's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Funny, simpleton. You're no match for me, baby vamp. You made a mistake threatening me. Now, I'll make you regret it."

With a swift motion, Karla slapped Janice with such force that she flew back, landing in a crumpled heap on the floor. I gasped in horror as Karla's attention shifted to me, her eyes gleaming with malevolent delight.
