Chapter 19: The Decision part 2Rene POV
Luther's voice cut through the chaos, commanding Janice to stop. For a moment, her monstrous gaze turned towards him, her expression wild and untamed. Without hesitation, Luther lunged forward, restraining her as she struggled against his grip. Relief flooded through me at his timely intervention, preventing a potentially deadly outcome.
I watched as Luther swiftly took action, pulling out his phone and making a call in hushed tones. Moments later, a man appeared at the door, and Luther handed Janice over to him with quiet instructions. They left swiftly, taking Janice away from the scene.
As Luther turned back to me, his eyes were clouded with anger. "What's going to happen to her?" I asked, my voice heavy with guilt and concern.
"She'll be contained for the time being," Luther replied tersely, his tone reflecting his own turmoil. I knew this was my fault, my desperate attempt to bring back my friend having backfired so horribly.
"I thought she would come back," I confessed softly, overwhelmed by the consequences of my actions.
Luther's anger seemed to soften into a more contemplative expression as he met my gaze. "It's always a risk," he said quietly, his voice tinged with regret. "Mixing vampire blood with human blood can be unpredictable."
"Lets get you patched up before vampires smell you." Luther's voice was firm as he lifted me gently and carried me to an unused table. He began cleaning my wound with practiced efficiency. "You're good at this," I remarked, trying to distract myself from the pain.
"Oh, we haven't gotten to the worst part yet," Luther chuckled lightly. As he applied a disinfectant to my wound, a sharp stinging sensation made me gasp, and a tear escaped my eye. "Sorry, I had to disinfect it. A newly turned vampire biting a human can lead to complications," he explained calmly.
"That's interesting. Well, at least I won't be infected," I said, trying to lighten the mood despite the pain.
"Have you ever been like that?" I suddenly asked Luther, feeling a need to understand more about his past. He paused in his ministrations, pulling back slightly to meet my gaze with a serious expression. "Worse. The only difference is, I wasn't turned—I was born a purebred," he replied gravely.
I remembered hearing that term before; Aries had mentioned it. "What is a purebred?" I inquired, curious about its significance.
"A purebred is the opposite of turned humans, but it's more complicated than that. Aries should explain it to you," Luther said, his tone indicating that the concept was both significant and nuanced.
"All done. Give it a week or two, and it should be fine," Luther reassured me as he finished dressing my wound. I thanked him again for his skill. Luther helped me to my feet, and though I felt a bit woozy at first, it passed quickly.
"Sherry taught me. Well, if you asked her, she'd tell you I annoyed her until she caved in so I would leave her alone," Luther said with a smile.
"It sounds like you two were close," I remarked, sensing the bond between them.
"She's like a sister to me," Luther replied, meeting my gaze earnestly. I could see the sincerity in his eyes, which made me reconsider my initial judgments about him. Despite his vampire nature, he seemed genuinely caring. Yet, I knew he carried burdens from his past that shaped him.
As we talked, I wondered if I would ever see Janice again, even though she was now something monstrous. Before I could dwell on it further, a man approached us. "Luther, you may want to come with me. There's something that needs to be done," he said urgently.
