Chapter 17: Terror and Death

Aries POV

I watched him as he struggled, clawing at my hands. Fear and panic shone through his eyes, and I found it amusing. Jack had always thought of himself as tough.

"Still think you can overpower me, Jack?" I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm, as I squeezed tighter.

"Put me down," he gasped, his voice breaking.

I released him, and he fell to his knees, coughing and clutching his neck. I stood there, savoring the sight. Next time he won't be so stupid. Now, I had to compel this idiot. I grabbed him by the collar and looked into his eyes, ready to command his will. But something was stopping me.

"You can't compel me," Jack said, a smug grin forming on his face. He twisted out of my grip with surprising agility and bolted down the hallway. Despite not being at full strength, I should've chased him. But the guards couldn't see me out of the chambers, not after everything that had happened. I knew I had to go warn Sherry of what was happening. I hope I wasn't too late.

Rene POV

There was an urgent banging on the door. Sherry got up to answer, revealing Luther. "Has anybody been up here?" he asked her, his voice tense. Sherry shook her head, looking confused. Luther grabbed her and started to whisper in her ear. She gasped, pulling back with a hand going over her mouth.

"His own son?" she whispered, eyes wide.

"Yes, that's why I asked if anybody was here. They know," Luther said, glancing around.

"What's going on?" Janice yawned, coming into the living room in her pajamas.

"Here to rescue you two," he said, looking mostly at Janice. "Look, I'll explain later, but right now, being in this room isn't safe."

From whom? I was going to ask, but Luther grabbed us and started walking toward the door.

"Keep them safe, Luther. Wouldn't want something to happen to you," Sherry said.

He turned around, saying, "Thanks. Be safe, Sherry. They're coming for you." With that, he left with speed. When he reached his destination, he opened the door, pushing us inside.

"Hey! What is this all about?" Janice questioned.

"Guards are looking for Rene," he said.

They know. They know that Sherry helped us escape. They must've seen the body or something.

"Oh. Wouldn't they find her here, though?" Janice asked.

"They won't expect her to be in my room," he replied.

Well, this is great. Stuck in a room with a vampire who almost made a snack out of me.

"So, would you girls like to play a game or something?" Luther asked, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

I looked at him incredulously. "Seriously?"

"I do, but I'm gonna need some coffee," Janice said, stretching.

Were these two serious? Playing games in the middle of the night while the royal guards were looking for me?

"What? I'm bored," Luther said with a shrug. He went into the kitchen and returned with an iced coffee for Janice.

"Thank you," Janice smiled, taking the cup.

"You're welcome, pretty," Luther replied with a grin.

I sighed, feeling the tension of the situation and the absurdity of the moment.
