Chapter 41: No Time For Dates, Only AccusationsJanice POV
I scanned the room one more time, but there was still no sign of her.
"Janice, what's wrong?" Luther's voice echoed in my head, a thread of concern laced in his tone.
"Rene, she's not here. I think something's wrong. Hurry!" I responded with urgency, but after that, the connection went silent. I heard Paige in the background, moving things around aimlessly, but my mind was fixated on Rene's absence. Where could she be? A knock at the door pulled me out of my thoughts, and I rushed to open it. Luther stood there, his expression edged with worry.
"Thank goodness you're here, Luther." I breathed a sigh of relief.
Luther nodded, his eyes scanning the room. "You said Rene is missing. Are you sure?"
"Yes," I replied firmly. Without another word, Luther sidestepped me and began inspecting the space. He took a deep breath, and I noticed the way his face twisted into a frown.
"I can smell that scumbag human Jack's scent here," Luther commented, and I rolled my eyes, knowing his disdain for Jack was boundless. But as he continued to sniff the air, his expression darkened further.
"When I came in here, I caught Jack's scent leading out of the door, but not Rene's. And where the hell is the guard?" His voice was rising with anger, frustration simmering beneath the surface.
"That's the thing, I don't know. The door was locked," I replied, feeling a sense of unease creeping in. Luther fell silent, his thoughts seemingly distant. Paige nudged me, her eyes questioning, but all I could do was shrug in uncertainty.
"Luther?" I called out, hoping for some insight. He turned to me, his face unreadable. Suddenly, the sound of a whoosh filled the room, and our attention snapped to the door where Aries stood, his presence commanding. He walked in, calm and collected, which only added to the tension.
"Where is she?" Aries demanded, his voice resonating through the room.
"No one knows," Luther answered, his posture tense. I noticed a flicker of nervousness in him, though he tried to mask it.
"Inform me immediately of anything you find. No delays," Aries ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument. Before Luther could respond, Aries was gone, leaving behind an air of unease.
Luther exhaled deeply, relief washing over his face. "He's definitely pissed."
"How can you tell? He didn't show any emotion," I asked, confused by Luther's assessment.
"Exactly," Luther said, turning to face me. "When you can't read someone, it's unnerving. Not knowing how they feel... it's unsettling. I know he's not thrilled that Rene is missing, but that unreadable expression? That's a sign he's holding back."
I nodded, beginning to understand what he meant. The silence was broken by Paige's voice.
"Guys!" she called out, drawing our attention.
We walked over to her, curious about what she'd discovered. "Yeah, Paige?"
"I was looking around and noticed something odd. There's a coffee cup on this table and another on the counter. The one by the couch has less in it, and the other is like it wasn't touched at all."
Luther's eyes narrowed as he moved to investigate. He picked up both cups, sniffing them separately. A flicker of recognition crossed his face.
"She's right. Good job, Paige," Luther said, acknowledging her observation. Paige gave a small nod, satisfied with the recognition.
