Y/N POV
Once the explosive had been placed in the Megamycete, me and Chris continued deeper in search of Miranda. I thought it best to allow Chris to take the lead, I just stayed back and kept my magnum ready in case cover fire was necessary.
As we approached a stone staircase, one of Chris' team reported in "Captain, I have eyes on Miranda at the ceremony site." Chris replied "Keep your distance. Do not move until I give the order."
I growled in frustration, it seems I'd miscalculated. I'd initially thought this structure was located over the top of the ceremony site. I just had to hope now though that we could find a way to get there quickly, Rose's life depended on it.
One of the soldiers said something over the communicator that caught my attention "I know it's too late now but, we really should have told Ethan and Y/N the plan." I pointed out "You really should Chris."
Chris justified his actions "There wasn't time. And we didn't expect Miranda to act so soon." The soldier said "Even so, you should have told them." Chris just looked down, as if he was ashamed as he muttered "Yeah..."
I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, what's done is done. While I agree you should have said something to us sooner. It's too late for regrets. As is, we need to stay focused on the here and now. Taking out Miranda should be our top priority right now."
Oddly enough, when I said this, Chris just chuckled a bit. I raised an eyebrow in confusion causing Chris to say "Nothing, you just keep reminding me of that other Y/N I knew. It honestly feels like he's here." I nodded "You can tell me more about him another time. For now, we should get going."
We ascended up the stone staircase. At the top of which we found the stone entrance to some sort of underground crypt. It was unknown at first what its purpose was. However at the end, we found a door which upon opening answered that question.
A large room, all sorts of items strewn about across the place. I commented "Looks like some sort of Lab." Chris nodded before adding "Must be Miranda's" We spread out across the room and inspected the details.
On the wall were drawings that appeared to be diagrams various creatures I'd fought up to now, results of Megamycete experimentation. On one of the tables was a giant lump of that thick black Mold, at first this was interesting, but what I found next really caught my attention.
On one table I saw four books, lined up, each one seemed to have a marking on it that I instantly recognized as the emblems of each of the four lords. Dimitrescu, Beneviento, Moreau and Heisenberg.
The first book on the table was Moreau, I picked it up and began reading. I skimmed through most of it before I found one page that seemed to be personal notes.
'Subject Name: Salvatore Moreau.
Cadou Affinity: Low
Brain Functions: Surprisingly low.
The Cadou has caused drastic changes to internal organs, transforming them into organs similar to fish-like gills and a swim bladder.
Another subject with irregular cell division causing him to transform into a giant fish. The subject is unable to control this transformation.
Too many defects. An unfit vessel for Eva.'
I finished reading that book, not saying anything before I put it back down. I moved on to the next one, this one had the crest of House Dimitrescu, a shudder went down my spine as I thought back to the castle. Picking the book up though, I once again found another dosier.
'Subject Name: Alcina Dimitrescu.
