Alaska's Flag

A/N: Somehow I figured out how to forget to put this in the book. So, you all are treated to an extra scene that's not an extra scene. This event happened circa 1927

Hawaii layed out the blanket on the grass, and surveyed it. "Good enough. You would think that this yard would be less rocky, considering how long you all have been here. Does no one clean it out?"

"I don't think anyone really wants to try. Too much work." Alaska shrugged. He touched his face again, still with the self consciousness he had since his flag had been raised. It was blue, with yellow stars in the shape of the Big Dipper, and the north star.

"Don't worry about it, Lasky, you look amazing." Hawaii smiled. "Still can't believe it was made by a kid."

"You really like it?" Alaska asked softly,

"Much better than the Fish's flag." Hawaii agreed, shaking her head. "Seriously, you have one of the best flags I've seen. Easy enough to recognise, and really pretty."

"Thank you." Alaska beamed with joy at the compliment, and sat down on the blanket with Hawaii. He looked up at the stars, and smiled. "Ever think about changing your own flag?"

"Sometimes." Hawaii shrugged. "Only problem is I'm a little bit attached to it now. And the Union Jack pisses off enough people that it's worth it to keep it. It's a nice flag, overall."

"I see you're still a Brit, through and through." Alaska rolled his eyes.

"Excuse you, my flag is a fine one, thank you very much." Hawaii made a dramatic sweep of her hand. "Besides, my accent's going away on its own, what with the amount of time I spend around you all. Only really old folks have it."

"So you're really old, and a limey." Alaska said.

"First off, I'm younger than you, remember? And two, since when did you have a problem with England?" Hawaii teased. "I can assure you, he's such a charming fellow. And quite the conversationalist."

"I'll take your word for it."

"When was the last time we did this? A hundred years ago?" Hawaii said softly. "Stars still are the same. Remember my favourite?"

"You like... It was that star you said was happy." Alaska said, after a moment's thought. "The happy star."

"Hokule'a. Star of Gladness, right above Honolulu. Carried my father's people here." Hawaii smiled. "And I remember you said you really liked the Big Dipper."

"Well... it ended up on my flag." Alaska said. "I like it a lot."

"That's great. You know what my favourite constellation is?" Hawaii said, before reaching up to touch Alaska's face. "It's yours. Best constellation in the world, because I can see it during the day too."

Alaska immediately got all embarrassed, and tried to hide his face. It was so funny to see someone like this just fall to pieces at compliments. And part of it made her sad to think that maybe this wasn't really normal for him. Note to self. Laska needs to hear praise more.

"What, can't you take a dose of the truth?" Hawaii laughed. "Come on Lasky. Give me that million-dollar smile."

Alaska kept his face covered in his hands.

"Come on, I know you like it!" Hawaii said, moving his hands to see it better. "Tsk. You, my friend, need to learn to take compliments better. Gonna get a lot of them from being this sweet."

"Easy for the 'Island Paradise' to say." Alaska retorted

"Don't you start that up with me, Laska. It's about you. Not me." Hawaii said, "And you are just the sweetest Teddy bear I have ever met."

Alaska made a small sound, somewhat like an embarrassed squeak, and Hawaii had to smile even more.

"It's nice out here." Hawaii said, smiling. She put her head back, and smiled at the stars.

It was nice to slow down.
