*the next day*

I notice a girl kneeling down by the road. "Hey," Sam says. She doesn't respond. He steps toward her and taps her shoulder. She gasps, jumping back.

"You scared the hell out of me," she admits, pulling her headphones out.

"I'm sorry. I just thought you might need some help," he sighs.

"I'm good, thanks."

"Uh, so, where you headed?"

"No offense, but no way I'm telling you two," she says.

"Why not," he asks.

"You could be some kind of freak. I mean, you are hitchhiking."

"Well, so are you," Sam point outs, chuckling. I hear a car beep making me turn around. The man comes to a stop, speaking.

"Need a ride?"

"Yeah," we all say.

"Just them," he says, pointing at us ladies. "I ain't taking you."

"Well, tough luck. We're together," I shrug, as she grabs her bags and hopping in the car. "You trust shady van guy and not us?"

"Definitely." He drives off, and I roll my eyes.

"Well... let's keep walking," I sigh.

"Sorry, the Sacramento bus doesn't run again till tomorrow. 5:05 P.M."

"Tomorrow? There's gotta be another way."

"Well, there is. Buy a car," she says. I scoff, walking away from her.

"Hey." I look up to see the same girl from before sitting on the floor.

"Hey."

"You two again."

"What happened to your ride," I question, crossing my arms.

"You were right. That guy was shady. He was all hands," she admits. "I cut him loose." Sam glances at the bus. "What's the matter?"

"Just trying to get to California."

"No way."

"Yeah."

"Me too. You know, the next bus isn't till tomorrow."

"Yeah. Yeah, that's the problem."

"Why? What's in Cali that's so important?"

"Just something I've been looking for for a long time."

"Well, then I'm sure it can wait one more day, right?"

Honestly, this girl is giving me weird vibes. I don't like her. The way she's looking at Sam is making me uncomfortable.

"I'm Meg."

"Sam, and this is Callie."

I clench my jaw, squinting my eyes at her.

There's just... something off about her. It's hard to describe.

"Sam, a word please," I ask. "Excuse us." I pull him aside.

"What's wrong?"

"I don't like her."

"What do you mean? Why? You barely know her."

"She just... gives me weird vibes that's all."

"Really?"

"Yeah... I don't know how to explain it; I just-- I don't trust her."

"I think you're being a bit paranoid. Maybe even... jealous?"

"What," I exclaim, in a hushed voice. "I am not jealous."

"Right."

"I'm not. I just... don't trust her, that's all."

~ ~ ~

I tap my foot nervously as I watch them clink their bottles together.

He wanted to sit and talk with her, but I don't want any part of that. I'm serious when I say... I don't trust her. She's weird. She gives off this bad energy, and I don't know what it is or why, but I have to go with my gut on this.

After hearing about this demon situation and having my own problem with it, it's hard to trust anyone right now.

Sam laughs, and I roll my eyes, looking away from them.

And maybe part of it is jealousy too.
