I don't really like it but it's all I have rn :)Here you stood at the kitchen counter trying to race drinking a juice box with your friends daughter, Nila.
She came over a few nights ago when your friend had a little vacation to go on with her boyfriend, so you gladly accepted taking care of your niece. Nila is the most cutest, funny, and calm baby you ever taken care of. She'd only cry if she was frustrated or over excited about something, she wouldn't whine unless her incoming teeth hurt, and she was a competitive little thing. So far only half the team has met her, the rest have been out on a mission.
Without any entertainment at four in the morning, here you two were having a race with juice boxes and granola bars. You're boyfriend, Bucky, has yet to see either of you since his mission lasted over two nights. Supposedly, he and his team came in earlier around eleven at night. He called to ask where you were but you had Nila all day at your friends house getting her ready for a sleepover, or as Nila liked to call it, Week-over.
"I won!" Nila shouted, her high pitched laugh echoed while her juice box fell from her lips into her hand, "I won, auntie, look!"
"Sh," You laughed in between your whisper, "People are still sleeping."
"Sorry," She whispered back, "Can we meat bars now?"
Even though she was six, her English was still a bit rocky because it wasn't her first language. She first picked up Spanish while in her first few weeks of kindergarten, but because she skipped to first grade, English was her second hand language. Although her mother didn't understand how in the hell she picked up Spanish, she encouraged it and learned some herself, as did you. Nila only spoke Spanish for certain sentences and when she was extremely exhausted or sad.
"Eat, babygirl, it's 'can we eat bars now,'"You said, pursing your lips in mock thought, eventually agreeing, "Remember the rules,"
"Don't chew or swallow to fast," She smiled up at you, her big eyes held so much adoration.
"Good job, babygirl," You praised and opened her bar for her, "Ready? Set, G—"
"What's going on?"
The interrupting voice didn't seem to stop Nila as she bit into her bar, a heavy bite when not all of her teeth came in yet. After she ate and started chewing, she raised her eyes to meet the silhouette in the hallway. You turned as well, seeing Bucky standing there rubbing his eyes. He was dressed in shorts and fluffy socks, his comfort blanket was draped over his shoulder while his hair looked big.
"Hi baby," You smiled widely as you crossed the room and jumped in his arms, "I missed you so much. How was the mission?"
He kissed your forehead and rested his head on top of yours for a moment, still incredibly tired, "I missed you too, doll. It wasn't bad, wasn't easy either. I got what we needed and left without any major damage. I see your days were pretty eventful."
You pulled back and looked over your shoulder at Nila, who was just staring and continuing to eat her bar. She waved and Bucky waved back, a sudden shy expression crossed his face upon seeing the girl more closely.
"Bucky, this is Nila, my friends daughter and my niece. Nila, this is another one of your Uncles, Uncle Bucky," You introduced the two and Bucky's breath caught in his throat.
"Me duelen los dientes," She complained, a mouthful of granola, noticing Bucky, "Hi, Uncle Bucky." (My teeth hurt)
You looked up at Bucky who looked down at you confused, "Her attention span is rather short when she's not focused on school."
"What'd she say?" He asked, receiving a questionable gaze from you, "What? I never learned Spanish."
You chuckled and walked back over to Nila, taking her bar from her hand and getting her a cup of Tony's special soft ice out the freezer. Nila hopped off the counter, onto a chair, reached the floor, and wobble-walked over to Bucky, staring up at him with grabby hands. He was stuck for a moment, but seeing the tears that started to form in her eyes he quickly picked her up and held her against him. She let out a few giggles and squeals as you came back with the ice and held it towards her.
"Gracias," She took the bag and put some in her mouth then holding the rest to her face.
"Her teeth hurt," You finally explained to Bucky, watching him as he watched Nila with an unreadable expression, "Some of them are starting to twist certain ways and the others are still coming in. Y/f/n warned me about since last I saw her, probably a bad idea to give her the bar in the first place."
"Mmmhmmm," She shook her head in response to your comment, "It was good, Puedo recuperarlo? Please?" (Can I have it back?)
"No," You shook your head in protest, "We've got to get to bed soon anyways, your mom is picking you up later on."
"But I don't wanna leave," Her bottom lip started to tremble uncontrollably and Bucky was quick to gently pat her back.
"No no, it's okay, you'll come back here again soon." He rubbed her back now, swaying a little to calm her down before it got too bad, "Don't cry."
She sniffed quietly and looked at him, "Pero mamá viene a buscarme y no me divertiré más..." (But mom is coming to get me and I won't have fun anymore...)
"Sí, cariño, te divertirás mucho con mamá," You whispered, taking her from Bucky's arms and rocking her slowly to sleep, "Estará feliz de volver a verte después de tanto tiempo, ¿no?" (Yes you will baby, you'll have lots of fun with mom./ She'll be so happy to see you after so long, no?)
As you continued to rock and whisper her into sleep, Bucky stood behind you watching the interaction. He loved seeing you with kids, it was refreshing really. He imagined a life with you often, seeing you in his head dancing around the kitchen with his kids. His smile was wide as he spaced out and thought deep into the subject.
"Okay, she's sleep." You whispered as you walked past him, "I'm going to go lay her down, coming?"
A deep breath left him as he made a final decision in his head and turned around to nod, "Of course, doll."
A family? Yes.
