Lincolns POV
I tap my fingers anxiously against my desk. I don't want to be here. Maggie took Jo to play golf and train until Clabus leaves but can't stop thinking about her and our conversation from yesterday.
She said everything was fine but I ruined it, she was distant at breakfast and left to spend the day with Maggie. I've been angry and fidgety ever since. I could see that I hurt her feelings but I panicked. I know that my questions made her feel like I think very lowly of her but that couldn't be more wrong. We went from hardly speaking to sleeping together so quickly that I'm afraid we skipped a step.
I wouldn't take it back but I just felt like I had to ask her, I had to be sure. I'm so drawn to her and I can't help but to wonder if she feels it too. The truth is, I'm afraid of these feelings. The Moon Goddess has made her disdain for me very clear, finding someone who is so perfectly compatible with me, who I feel so connected to, that also has no mate, seems too perfect. I'm waiting for disaster.
A knock at my door pulls me begrudgingly from my thoughts of her soft lips and wild hair. Vic and Cam come in, looking nervously at me. I've been a bit short-tempered since yesterday.
"Luke just called, Clabus is being escorted up right now," Cam says cautiously, eyeing me warily and taking a seat.
"Fine. Let's just get this over with. Did you let Mags know that he's here?"
"Yes, she knows. Jo doesn't want to see him but she seemed alright, like him being here wasn't uncomfortable for her." Vic adds.
I open my mouth to speak but the door swings open and Clabus enters behind a serious-as-usual Luke.
"Your Majesty!" Clabus bows dramatically with a big, stupid smile on his face.
Vic and Cam stand and after the three of them embrace and take their seats, we stare at each other for a moment.
"Well?" I turn to Clabus, not feeling like wasting any time on small talk or pleasantries.
"Right to it then," he nods, "our counsel has learned of a small fraction of fanatics who believe that this dark magic is the only way to see our people through this strange time. As we have discussed in the past, we are experiencing an unprecedented decline in our kind. For reasons we still can't pinpoint, we are not producing magical children, the unions between witches and warlocks are resulting in human children. Our population has dwindled to the lowest number in recorded history."
I clench my fist below my desk. I already know all of this, I don't know why he's telling us again. Until we know what is causing the decline in their number, both wolf and vampire elders can't really help. We have offered them resources, scientists to help in their efforts to find the cause of this but that's as far as we can go. We aren't doing anything to cause this, they don't know what the problem is, it's horrible but there isn't much we can do.
Clabus continues talking, not really giving any new information but circling around information that he's already given to us.
I can't help but to watch him. Something about this feels off. He's at ease outwardly, but I can feel tension below the surface. I know he's facing a lot of pressure from his kind to figure out what's going on. I can sympathize with the tension and difficulty that hes facing but my instincts are telling me that it's more.
Whatever is going on in his Kingdom, it's bad, and we need to be prepared for it.
"What about the girl? The she-wolf that they found? How is she?" the sound of his voice draws me back to the conversation.
"She's good, recovering and recuperating in a safe place," I tell him, making sure to avoid giving any details about her.
I don't miss the look that Cam shoots me before they begin talking again, about the sorceress that Jo was able to identify and the efforts that are being made to locate her.
"We believe that the people involved in this are using dark magic to conceal themselves somewhere. They haven't been seen in weeks, by anyone, and we aren't able to use magic to draw them out. It has to be a concealment spell."
"Can you trace the magic? The mate potion that they made must have a signature, right? Dark magic is outlawed so there should be a strong trail," Vic asks him.
I can see the suspicion on his face, he obviously feels it too, something isn't right here.
"If I could meet with the girl, I might be able to trace it..."
"I'll reach out, see if we can set that up," I says matter of factly.
"Please do," he sighs and runs his hand over his face, "I'm under a lot of pressure here. This group is causing major tension for everyone. Many witches and warlocks are afraid that we are all going to be condemned for the actions of a very small few. We need this to stop as much as you."
"We won't let that happen. I'll send more scouts out to the northern boarder, we will find them, they can't hide forever."
"I'll make a call to our elders and ask for more scouts too, we're spread pretty thin but I'm sure they can spare a few more," Vic offers.
My mind wanders again as they start to chat again. My wolf is on edge and my body is tense. I want to go find her, to fix the damage caused by my idiotic questions.
Without warning I stand, all of them staring, frozen mid-sentence.
"I have something I have to do, right now," I tell them sternly before taking long strides toward the door.
