Chang Heng smiled and walked over, sitting down opposite him. "There is no other choice, is there? I need you to keep an eye on those people and also be on the lookout for the crystal bead. Make sure not to stay too close though. The other side had so much time to prepare, there has to be an ambush. Even if it's possible to survive, don't take the risk."
Si Yan inclined his head. He didn't intend to die in this war. Anyway, it wasn't one they were eager to fight. "Then the previous plan ..."
"Do it if there is an opportunity." Chang Heng leaned back and picked up his spatial bag, looking through it and taking out a sphere-shaped item. "Take this. It'll keep you a little safer."
Si Yan silently took the object and stashed it away. "Getting close to the righteous faction won't be easy. They'll attack at first sight."
Chang Heng lowered his eyelids and hummed. "This is an issue. Especially so late in everything." Raising his gaze again, he shook his head and sighed. "If you really can't get close, don't bother, and just make sure you escape. No matter how all of this ends, we'll find a way forward. In the worst case, leave the sect and start anew elsewhere. It's not like others haven't done it before."
Chang Heng might only be an Elder of the Fei Jian Sect but he was one of the three Elders most likely to inherit the position of Sect Master so in the things he did, he always considered the overall development of the sect. Their sect differed a lot from the others in the demonic faction in so far that it had never been too cleanly in one camp or the other. In fact, it wouldn't be wrong to say that they had only ended up on that side of the border region due to a bad decision. In his mind, that didn't have to define them forever, and now was the perfect moment to change their affiliation.
But then, he wasn't the only one with a say in the sect. One of the other three stood in line with the Wu Yun Sect and seemed intent on following them, believing that they could reach greater heights that way. Meanwhile, the last person was holding back, mostly appeasing whoever he was currently speaking to. As for their Sect Master ... she was at a critical stage in her own cultivation and hadn't paid much attention to the sect matters for a long time. Unless they were literally about to be annihilated, she wouldn't bother coming out to deal with it.
Under such conditions, it wasn't easy to steer the sect forward and Chang Heng didn't dare to set too high a goal. After all, if they couldn't agree on how to move forward, then there was nothing he could do apart from trying his best on his own. In the end, as long as he and his own people survived, he could live with it. Especially under the current circumstances, just getting out of this alive with Si Yan would be enough. This was the person he cared for the most, after all.
Looking at his oldest disciple, Chang Heng felt somewhat worried. He didn't want to send him but if he didn't, that Yue Nuan would keep a closer eye on them, making any further steps more difficult to take. Thus, he had to take this risk.
Si Yan smiled at his Master's worried gaze. "Nothing will happen. Don't you have any trust in the things you've taught me?" He got to his feet and stretched before walking up to Chang Heng's side. "I will come back." There was no hesitancy in his voice and not a single sliver of doubt.
As Chang Heng's oldest disciple, he wasn't like most of those brash youngsters who had accompanied their Masters here. If even he couldn't do it ... well, all of them would be screwed. And while the two of them expected some carnage, everyone being wiped out would still be too dramatic, wouldn't it?
While their faction wasn't working together well and everyone had their own agenda in this war, the disciples they sent were still their elite disciples. How badly could they do after a setback or two? At the very least, things should end in mutual destruction with few survivors on both sides. Then, it'd be time to rebuild for everyone.
Si Yan was certain that he'd be one of the people who survived. He was also certain that his Master would be the same. They had planned long enough and the information they had should be vital enough for the righteous side to let them live if they truly won the war. If they didn't, then as long as their sect made a symbolic show of fighting, they wouldn't be any worse off than before. If the result was indeed mutual destruction ... well, they could be part of the survivors. It was all about being flexible.
Si Yan leaned down and wrapped his arms around his Master's shoulders, closing his eyes. "I won't let you down. I promise you. I hope Master will do the same." He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled before letting go and straightening up again.
Yes, right now, he was more worried about his Master. After all, he'd be out there in the border region or in that underground palace with its winding corridors and side halls. There would be many opportunities to slip away and find a way out for himself. Especially so since the others would be busy with their own matters. But the headquarters where his Master was staying were different.
The disciples might mind their own business but the same couldn't be said about the Elders. These people had nothing better to do than spy on each other and scheme on a daily basis. Of course, his own Master wasn't much different but looking at this person, he naturally felt different about it even if it was the same action. The point was: If these people hindered his Master and he couldn't escape in time, he'd be angry but helpless to do anything about it. What should he do then? So, he'd rather not be put in that position.
