Shizuko's PoV:
As a member of the royal family, my life could be considered comfortable, but it came with many challenges.
For one, the moment I turned 18, my father was already trying to arrange a husband for me.
Since I was a little girl, I knew this would be my fate, so once we had the conversation, I was completely prepared.
It was only until my parents held a royal ball to help me find a suitor, that I realized my fate wasn't something I wanted for myself.
"Your Highness."
I turned my head to an unfamiliar voice as I stayed seated on my throne, a chair placed comfortably in between the thrones of my parents.
Some feet in front of me bowed a young woman. Her voice was quite high-pitched but comforting, and almost alluring.
For the entire night, I've been approached, so this woman was nothing new.
"Lift your head.", I sighed inwardly, trying my best to enjoy this celebration.
The woman did as I told and our eyes met. Her features were soft, the smile pulling at her lips hiding more than her good mood.
"And you are?", I didn't recognize her.
This ball was full of different lines of the royal family. Some blood related, and some nobles with connections to the royal family.
Most of the people here I wasn't familiar with, so an unknown face wasn't unexpected.
"I'm Lady Kimiko Oma.", she replied, brushing some of her dark purple hair behind her ear.
The title 'Lady' piqued my interest. She must've been the daughter of a Duke or Duchess.
I nodded with a smile, "It's nice to meet you, Lady Kimiko. Please, enjoy the—"
"Your Highness!", suddenly, a middle-aged man approached, quickly grabbing Kimiko by her arm and hiding her behind him.
"Oh. Duke Daiki.", I blinked, a little taken aback by his sudden entrance. I knew this man, a frequent attendant of any meeting my father held.
Lady Kimiko looked baffled, almost offended by the Duke's sudden intrusion. It didn't feel like she was being shielded, more like hidden away from my view.
"Please forgive me.", Daiki bowed, "It appears I let her out of my sight."
I tilted my head with confusion, "Is there a problem?", I sat up on my throne.
The Duke shook his head, "No, of course not! It's just the little bastard child—"
"Hey! I'm right here, you old joke!", Kimiko hissed, her brows furrowing with anger.
Bastard child?
It didn't take long for me to understand. The word 'bastard' only meant one thing, Kimiko was the production of an affair."Please, you two.", I groaned, "There is nothing to apologize for, Duke Daiki, I was just having a conversation with her."
"I-I see...", Daiki cleared his throat, "But if you'll excuse me, I need to borrow her, Your Highness."
Before I could say anything, the Duke grabbed Kimiko's arm once again, his grip quite tight, and pulled her away into the sea of guests.
Kimiko stumbled to keep up with the Duke, casting one more glance back at me before disappearing into the crowd.
That was something.
There was a lot I could take from that situation but I didn't feel like stressing myself over something that had nothing to do with me.
