Shuichi's PoV:
"Fishing..?" I blinked.
"Yeah! Just hang out, you know??" Kaito Mamota grinned widely, patting my back.
"Ah-" the accidental strength behind those pats rendered me almost breathless, "Uhm...I dunno. I don't know how to fish."
"Then I'll teach ya. It's not too hard!"
"....Okay.", I nodded.
Kaito beamed, "Great! I'll be getting the boat this weekend-"
"Wait, hold on.", I interrupted, "Boat? Why a boat?"
Kaito raised an eyebrow, "It's more fun that way?", he spoke like it was the most obvious answer in the world, "It'll be just us bros, on the open lake, fishing!"
"...Kaito, I can't....swim.", I deadpanned.
"What?!", his jaw fell open.
"I'd prefer if we went fishing from on the shore.", I crossed my arms.
Kaito groaned, "Come on! I'm already getting the boat! We'll be careful, so just take a risk this time!"
"Kaito..."
"It'll be fine, Shuichi! I'll be there with ya! Loosen up!", he placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
I pondered it.
Of course, I could trust Kaito, but anxiety nipped at the back of my mind. What if something happened and we didn't have a backup plan?
But maybe Kaito was right. Just maybe I needed to loosen up."...Fine. Just this once.", I relented.
"Nice!", he cheered, "Let's meet at Lake Luna on Saturday afternoon."
I paused, "Lake Luna? There's a surplus of fish there, sure, but no one goes to such a big lake anymore."
"Hm? Why?", Kaito asked.
"Some rumour about unnatural creatures beneath its depths. I assumed you'd want to avoid such places, Kaito.", I chuckled.
"I'm not scared of some stupid fish! And look on the bright side. We'll be the only ones out there!"
"I suppose. The idea isn't...terrible.", I smiled.
"Right? I promise you won't regret it!", Kaito nodded.
I was hoping he was right.
It was just fishing. It was a nice evening of fishing with my best friend on the large, peaceful lake, Lake Luna.
What could go wrong?......
The fateful Saturday then arrived.
The sun was high in the sky, shining brightly on this day's afternoon.I arrived by Lake Luna earlier than our agreed-upon time. The lake was surrounded by a thick amount of forest trees, with only twelve feet of shore separating the lush greenery and wet depths of the lake.
I waited patiently on the shore, coming from a man-made trail through the forest on the west side of the lake. A small pack of my belongings hung loosely on my back. My phone, a snack or two, my wallet, my house keys. Just in case.
I had some idea of what to expect from today's events, but as the clock struck 12:15 p.m., I saw a medium-sized fishing boat approach my direction from another area of the large lake.
At first, I didn't think much of it, even though barely anyone still fished on this lake. But as it got closer, I saw a familiar figure waving wildly at me from the boat deck, and I immediately knew who it was.
Kaito.
"Shuichi! Over here, dude!!", Kaito called loudly.
Though no one was around, I felt embarrassed I was in this situation, just standing here by myself, but what could I do? He was my friend, and I wanted today to be a good day.
