Shuichi's PoV:
An actual siren.
What am I going to do?
The ethereal creature continued to stare, his amusement all too obvious, like he enjoyed watching me panic.
I had no clue what he was capable of, so I needed to be cautious despite the immense fear in my chest.
First, I had to get up on my feet.
Collect my stuff, then get to Kaito to make sure he's okay.My muscles were stiff, the cold breeze seeping into my soaked clothes doing nothing to help.
The siren watched my every breath with interest, his clawed fingers twitching against the dirt beneath. The water from the lake cascaded down his figure, illuminating his shimmering scales even more, almost blinding at the incorrect angle.
I observed the situation with as much logic as I could muster in this state.
My phone, waterlogged, sat abandoned beside the creature, forgotten and ignored due to the known object of interest. Myself. My pack was still discarded in front of him, my wallet and keys lingering nearby. Meanwhile, there was no saving the snacks. Figures.
I had to distract the mythical-, well...the real siren to have some semblance of a chance. I needed to ensure my safety first, then Kaito's no matter what.
I didn't want to seem like a predator because I was unsure if the creature would feel threatened and become hostile towards me.
But that seemed like the best option.
I worked up the courage and repositioned myself to stand, the siren watching my every move with amusement. When I stood, I made sure to keep my stance slightly lowered, but not in a way I seemed like pathetic prey.
It felt like my heart was fighting its way out of my chest. My knees threatened to collapse, sending me to the ground, but I had to be logical and calm.
The creature tilted his higher, his gaze locked onto mine, no matter our height difference. His soaked bangs did nothing to hide his unnatural, glowing eyes like they were a light source of their own.
I shifted ever so slightly in the direction of the siren, which made him flinch, but he didn't shrink away. He leaned forward.
His ethereally white tail flicked again, his once submerged, betta fish-like fin sending more water drops into the air. The iridescent, while scales covering said tail glimmered with hints of blue and purple, the hues shifting with every move he made.
I shifted closer once more, crouching lower to reach for my pack and its scattered items. The creature copied my movement like it was a game, bending his arms to lower himself as well, his eyes never leaving my face.
When my shivering fingers clutched the pack strap, a wave of temporary relief washed over me. I was getting closer to getting out of here.
With careful yet swift movements, I gathered my keys, then my wallet, and stuffed them inside of the pack before lifting it off of the ground slightly.
I kept the creature in my peripherals to make sure he wasn't gearing up to attack me. Thankfully, he didn't move, just watched, like a child watching an animal they've never seen before.
Things were going well.
He hasn't tried to sing or move in a predatory way. Unfortunately, things wouldn't remain so harmonious. As I slowly lifted my pack from the ground, the creature moved, and quickly at that.
His clawed, gradient fingers reached out toward me.
