Felix

We had a bonfire in the front yard. At the "beach", a little circle of sand where a pool once sat. We, the pack, have always called it the beach. Always.

Maxine and I sat on a blanket on the sand. She leaned into my chest and I ran my fingers absentmindedly through her hair. All was at peace.

The fire danced, the flames flickered.

And a wolf appeared from the shadows.

Maxine was asleep.

The wolf shifted, of course, and Jac stood in front of me. She sat down. "Felix,"

I smiled. "Jac."

I wanted to shift. I wanted to run off with Jac through the trees.

But I couldn't.

Maxine was asleep.
