Reader is Laxus' older sister, making her the granddaughter of Makarov. Also, imagine that Lucy has joined the guild for only a few days. It's lengthy, but a lot of it is dialogue that was pulled directly from the anime.

"BIG NEWS!"
Max and Warren nearly trip while rushing into the guild while telling their guild mates about the exciting news. Bells can be heard chiming from outside.
Lucy stands around with a confused expression on her face. "What is it?"
"The bells are ringing?" Wendy and Carla question.
"This ringing means..." Natsu's eyes widen.
"Aye!" Happy agrees.
Elfman gasps and Gray's lips tug into a grin. "Could it be?"
Natsu smiles widely. "Gildarts has come back!"
"Aye, sir!" Happy agrees once more.
"GILDARTS!"
The entire guild rejoices, jumping up and down and passing around drinks.
"Gildarts? I've never met him. Who is he?" Lucy is still confused.
Mira walks up to Lucy. "He's Fairy Tail's strongest wizard."
"EEEHHHH???!!!" Lucy's jaw drops and her eyes pop out upon hearing Mira's statement. "Wait, even stronger than Erza?"
"I'm not even in his league." Erza smiles and Lucy sweat drops. 'How strong can this guy get?' She thinks to herself as the guild's cheering gets even louder.
"Not like I care, but what's the celebrating about?"
Wendy's eyes light up with excitement. "It's like a festival, Carla"
"Definitely one festive guild..." Carla murmurs while hovering beside Wendy with a bored look.
"It's only natural for everyone to celebrate," Mira explains. "It's been about three years since he came back."
Lucy gasps. "Three years? What was he doing?"
"There are quests more difficult than S-class, called SS-class," Mira continues. "But there are quests even above those called ten-year quests."
Lucy's eyes widen even more. "Ten-year quests?"
"No one has completed them for more than ten years. That's why they're called ten-year quests," Erza elaborates. "Gildarts went on one even more difficult, a hundred-year quest."
"Hundred-year quest?" A shiver goes down the blonde's spine. "No one has managed to complete it for a hundred years?!"
"Right," the redhead confirms.
~Outside~
"Gildarts!"
"Gildarts has returned!"
The townspeople outside shout to everybody about the wizard's arrival. A magical horn flies around announcing a warning.
"Magnolia will now change to Gildarts Shift! Everybody, please move to the designated areas," it squeaks.
