"They seem to be taking to each other very well."

I hummed in response, watching Puppy trailing behind Jennifer to get a closer look at the ducks. "Should I get him?"

"No," waved Glenn. "The ducks here are very used to humans. They won't let them get too close. Anyway, how are you feeling?"

"Honestly," I say in the grass. "Uncomfortable?"

Glenn chuckled. "I feel you. It took me a while before I was comfortable enough to take her out in public like this and even longer to actually feel okay about it. It's not an overnight change. It something you have to cope with yourself."

"So that's it then? I put on a happy face for him?"

"Yup. Put up the little moments and enjoy the big ones. Literally."

I laughed a bit awkwardly. "I guess that's all I can do."

"You seem better about this."

"My shrink sat me down about. I guess I understand that I need to do this for Puppy. Despite how I feel about it."

"He'll be able to sense if you're not engaged however. Just keep that in mind."

"How do you...do it. I mean I know obviously but--"

"The little thing makes it complicated. I get that. Really you need to make that distinction and commit to it. You can't be Scott and Daddy to him all at once--you'll confuse him and yourself. Help him to sexualize only the Scott part of you and the big part of him."

"How?" I asked a bit pleadingly.

Glenn smiled. "Can't tell you. It's different for each couple. Really Jenny made most of the agreements. I was perfectly fine with it because this was about her and what she needed."

"How do you start that conversation?"

"Puppy seems to have a short attention span, yes?"

"Almost aggravatingly yes." I agreed.

"So I suggestion you barrel right into the heart of it. Prompting him and slowly approaching the subject will do more harm than good. Use a lot of 'I' statements rather than 'you'. It takes some of the pressure off them. I know that when I say to Jenny, "You need to listen to me," she just resists more. Me saying, "I really need you to listen to my words," doesn't make her feel so accused. It's not just her--it's the both of us."

I ran a hand through my hair. "I feel like I should be taking notes."

"It'll feel that way at times, yes." He laughed. "Slowly increasing responsibility does wonders too. I gradually gave her more work and now she's all but running my front office. They can amaze you. She's made strides."

"So she's not fixed yet?"

Glenn looked sharply at me. "Are implying she's broken?"

"No! I just--"

"If you go into this with the idea there's something wrong with Puppy you'll both push too hard and it'll do more harm than good."

"Alright, alright." I held my hands up and Glenn sighed.

"I don't mean to snap at you. They're just fragile. It may not seem it when you think about all they've been through but mentally they are literally children at certain points. And I'm sure you know how delicate and impressionable they can be."

"I'm feeling better about it," I said slowly as they came scurrying back. "I want to do anything I possibly can for Puppy--he's been given up on too many times."

"Hi Scott!" He chirped kneeling beside me. He threw his arms around me and lovingly nuzzled my neck. "Can I have my jello please?"

I checked the time in my phone. "You may. Would you like some water too?"

"Yes please!"

"Papa I'm thirsty too!" Jenny whined falling to her knees beside Glenn.

Her blatant behavior made me feel a bit self conscious but not one was looking. Public behaviors like this weren't rare--I've seen men leading women down the street with nothing more than the basics and a collar by a leash. A grown woman acting like a younger girl wasn't all that weird.

"Yes honey."

I watched Glenn draw out a pastel purple sippy cup that Puppy stared at. "What's that Jenny?" He asked.

It was nice to not have a question directed at me and I listened to her reply with true interest. "It's my sippy so I don't spill my juice on my new dress. Right Papa?"

"That's right sweetie. Why don't sit down by Papa while you drink your juice? We don't want to lose another sippy do we?"

Jenny looked at Glenn wide eyed. "No Papa. I miss my blue kitty sippy."

"I'm sure you do," he agreed. "Did you have fun playing with Puppy?"

"Yep!" She cried. "He's not a real puppy though--that's just his name."

"I am real." Argued Puppy. "Can I have a sippy too?"

I felt a bit annoyed. I was trying to get him used to drinking like a grown up. Glenn looked at me. But it wasn't about me and what I wanted. "If you'd like one."

"Oh! We have my green daisy sippy--maybe Puppy can have that?"

Glenn shrugged his shoulders. "Up to you Princess. But no take-backs. If you're giving it to Puppy he gets to keep it."

"Forever?" Her voice wavered a bit and I frowned.

"I can just buy him a set," I cut in.

Glenn looked at Jenny. She put on a brave face. "I understand Papa. Yes I want Puppy to have it."

Glenn smiled. "What a good girl sharing all on her own."

She beamed at him and put down her sippy cup to take the green flower one he withdrew from the canvas bag. She held it out to Puppy proudly. It was well taken care of with you handles on the side.

That would really improve Puppy's grip too.

Puppy took it carefully like a precious gift and, of course, dropped it. He sucked in a gasp in horror and began to cry.

"I broke it!"

"No you didn't!" Jenny cried. "It's okay if you drop it cos it won't break, see?"

She hit it against the ground and Puppy watched in amazement. "Wow. And it's all mine? Forever and ever?"

"Uh-huh!" Jenny agreed.

It was difficult to think of them as adults. They were just so...cute. "Thank you!" Puppy cried on his own.

I smiled. "Good boy remembering your manners."

He smiled at me. "Thanks Daddy--I mean Scott." He looked down sheepishly and I kissed his cheek.

"You can call me whatever you want."

"Even Daddy? And-and you won't get mad?"

"Of course not buddy. I'll be anything you want me to be. Just give the word."

He threw his arms around my neck and kissed my cheek. "I love you," he whispered.

"I love you too buddy."
