Chapter 23

"Celia, just because you were invited doesn't mean you should go!"

It was Friday afternoon after a long day in school. Mia and I were walking back to the orphanage of a small town in New York.

"You don't understand Mia, I need to go to their sleepover! It's a chance for me to stand out!"

I wanted to be noticed by the cutest boy in Northern High. His name was Mason and he's part of the school government.

"Those girls are nothing but troublemakers! You can be popular in other ways!"

"What other ways was there than to actually hangout with the popular kids?" I huffed the other way leaving Mia to dwell on my words.

"... Why can't you just talk to him?"

"You know how weird I get when I'm around my crush... He has to talk to me first, and he would only do that if I'm equal in status."

"We're all equal..."

"We're orphans, we are looked down upon by everyone." I grabbed Mia's shoulders and vowed determinedly. "Everyone will stop making fun of us and start looking up to us. Trust me. I'll do it!"

"Please be careful Celia..."

That night when I dressed my best to Serena's house, her and a couple other girls welcomed me as if we've been friends all along.

"Hey Rosy! Me and the girls are just talking about you!" Her fingers glided over my shoulders and grabbed my bag. "Come in darling!"

"It's... Celia..." I whispered the last part incase she forgot my name.

Well, I don't mind if she called me by a nickname. It just means we're closer right?

"Hey hey, now that everyone's here, we can finally play truth or dare!"

I watched as each of the pretty teens picked each other before Serena picked me.

"Truth." I smiled nervously as the circle of girls stared at me.

"Who do you like?"

Oh, the cliche question that would always be a topic during sleepovers.

I will just answer truthfully, they'll probably help me.

"Mason." I giggled thinking the girls would sympathize.

They didn't.

What happened next was a series of mental disarray and dilemmas that forever changed my life.

How could just a name ruin me so much?

You don't even know.

I thought I was part of their popular group now that I'm hanging out with them.

The next school week was seemingly normal with the elections going on.

Mason was running for president again, and he will surly win again like years before.

When the entire school went to watch the debate, a runner-up humiliated Mason and me in the worst way possible.

"... Think before you vote ladies and gentlemen. Would you rather vote for me? Corey Chase, the popular captain of the tennis team? Or Mason Butler, the boy who is currently seeing Celia Roselia, the unpopular orphan? ... Thank you." Corey's claims in the microphone brought the whole stadium to silence. Mason stood up from his chair and ran on stage to the microphone stand.
