John the Baptist: Icon of Solitude

Sometimes, I think of the silence and solitude of John the Baptist. Living in the wilderness and eating just exotic food!

I imagine his austerity, the difficult life in the desert. I imagine his discomforts and the absence of luxuries in life. He must have a very unique calling, silence and solitude, reflecting and contemplating in order to prepare the way of the Lord.

I also imagine that his humility was a fruit of his silence and solitude. Of course he was called for holiness, but he cemented his humility by living an austere lifestyle and not seeking personal glory.

He had a very strange and ambitious dream though, to prepare the way of the Lord. That was his great joy, in small things, done in quiet but lived with faith.

He was too humble that he was able to say: "He must become great and I must become less."

I am praying that I may acquire just a point of his humility.

Amen
