A week on...

Standing in the kitchen I chopped up some fruit for Avari as she hummed along to the sound of the radio. The sun was shining and from the moment I woke I decided to open all the windows and doors to get some air circulating through the house.

"When's daddy home?" Avari asked from behind.

"Soon baby. Here." I smiled turning to hand her the bowl.

"Thanks mommy." She hummed pushing a strawberry into her mouth.

"Go take a seat and eat it, no running around."

"Okay." She replied walking off with the bowl and Gracie at her side.

I cleaned down the kitchen sides and placed the utensils and chopping board into the dish washer for the next cycle when the door went.

My eyes shot to the clock to check the time before I raced to the front door. Zak was due to be back and after forgetting his keys, I knew to expect a knock.

Flinging the door open, I almost barrelled out of it when a smaller figure caught my eyes. Gasping I froze to stare at the person before me.

"What are you doing here?!" I hissed grabbing the door to partly close it so that Avari couldn't see and Gracie couldn't get out.

"Hey." Nick smiled softly.

"What the fuck Nick, you need to go. Now. How the hell did you even find- it doesn't matter, just go."

He looked hurt as he took on my demand "Scarlett, please, I came to apologise."

"For saying I'm dead to you? Can you remember that far back?! Why the hell are you here?"

"I'm sorry, please hear me out."

"Listen Zak is on his way home and if he sees you her-"

"I don't care." He shrugged making me baulk.

"W-what?! Are you insane right now? After what you did?!"

"What did I do? Huh? What did I do that was so wrong? I provided for my family, is that a crime? Zak is running that show, it's not about the paranormal, it's about him. Surely you can see it's turned into the Zak show!" He spat in distaste.

I shook my head "What has happened to you?"

"Me?"

"You, you're so bitter." I added shaking my head.

"I did what I had too, like you did when I called an end to us."

My jaw tightened "It wasn't my proudest of moves. If I had any sense I should have noticed Zak."

He smirked "He always did try getting in the way."

"Who the hell are yo-"

The door behind me moved causing my body to stumble back in surprise.

I spun to see Avari looking at Nick curiously. "Baby go ba-"
