Chapter 29~ Sirius, Slashes and Sleeping Bags

Fred and I woke up from nap about ten minutes before the Halloween feast was over. We both quickly snuck down into the Great Hall and sat across from Anna and George.

"So." Anna started with a mischievous smirk on her face. "Where have you two been all this time?"

I rolled my eyes at her and answered her. "On a date, duh."

"Was that all?" George joined in.

"Yeah. Just a date." Fred answered cautiously.

"If that's the case, then why do the two of you have a massive case of bed head?"

"It might be because we fell asleep..." Fred said, still confused and cautious.

"Uhuh sure you did." Anna said, raising her eyebrows suggestively.

"What? No, we didn't do... that." I said quickly.

"Whatever you say little sister." She said in a sing-song tone.

"I am only five minutes younger than you!"

"You're still younger."

"By three minutes!"

"Still."

We soon were dismissed and each house went to their respective Common Rooms. As we approached the Portrait, there was a large crowd waiting outside.

"She didn't change the password, did she?" I asked, slightly annoyed.

"I don't know." Fred shrugged. "Maybe she went off to visit another painting."

"The Fat Lady is gone!" Someone in the crowd exclaimed.

"Her portrait is slashed!" Another said.

"Let me through please." Percy said as he pushed his way through the crowd. "What's the hold up here? You can't all have forgotten the password- excuse me, I'm Head Boy-" Percy stopped talking and all the Gryffindors fell silent. Suddenly Percy said in a sharp voice, "Somebody get Professor Dumbledore. Quick."

"Is she really gone?" Anna asked quietly.

"She can't be... could she?" George answered.

Dumbledore came sweeping toward the portrait and only when the crowd split did we see it.

The Fat Lady WAS gone. The portrait had been slashed with what looked like claws, or a knife. Chunks were missing and strips of canvas littered the floor.

I looked around to see McGonagall, Snape and Remus hurrying towards Dumbledore. "We need to find her." Dumbledore said. "Professor McGonagall, please go to Mr. Filch at once and tell him to search every painting in the castle for the Fat Lady."

"You'll be lucky!" Peeves said, appearing over our heads.

"What do you mean Peeves?" Dumbledore asked him.

"Ashamed, your Headship, sir. Doesn't want to be seen. She's a horrible mess. Saw her running through the Landscape up on the fourth floor sir, dodging between trees. Crying something dreadful, poor thing."

"Did she say who did it?"

"Oh yes Professor head. He got very angry when she wouldn't let him in you know. Nasty temper he's got, that Sirius Black."

My eyes widened in shock. I looked over to Remus to see his face was as white as a sheet and he had a broken expression on his face.

Dumbledore told Remus to escort us Gryffindors back to the Great Hall. I left Fred, George and Anna to run up to the front of the crowd where Remus was.
