Ava's P.O.V

When I passed out I had a noose around my neck, but I wake up on the floor of a strange room, being wrapped in a loose white blanket.

Am I dead?

"She's still alive?" Someone whispers. "Unfortunately," another person answers. "Well, he wants her now" the other person responds.

I'm propped onto my feet and whisked away to some unknown location. The commotion around the house is alarming. People run around like chickens with their heads cut off. What the hell is going on?

I don't have to wait too long before I get my answer. I hear him before I see him.

"And let me make this clear this is my city, nobody fucks with The Thirteen" that smooth overly confident voice of Cole's that I can't stand.

A breeze hits me as I'm led outside. I tremble with every step. Someone roughly grips my arm and yanks me forward. I'm hit by the incredible ruckus of police sirens, honking cars, outraged people and the faint sound of someone repeating "stand down, break it up" over a loudspeaker from what sounds like a helicopter. The person holding my arm tugs me toward them.

"Call me!" He growls into my ear.

Before I can react, I'm yanked in another direction and I hear that same smooth voice giving orders.

I'm put in a car that hits a crescendo speed in no time. Cole fumbles with the sheet draped over me, effectively pulling it over my head so I can see. I refuse to look at him. My first instinct is to draw my knees into my chest and looking out the window. The drive is silent.

"Just wait a second," he tells me when we arrive, leaving me in the car by myself.

He has a drawn-out conversation with the people outside. Their excitement alludes to a victory of some sort, I hear talks of "a new brotherhood".

I stare blankly outside the window unable to emotionally process everything that just happened. Finally, once everyone is gone, my side of the door opens. I look down, hiding my face. Cole cradles me into his chest, wrapping me up in his arms like a kitten he's just saved from a tree. He caries me inside to the couch where I'm put down. For a long time I can only manage to stare off into the distance.

"Ava, you have to get cleaned up" he says finally.

"Leave me alone" I croak.

"Seriously, your clothes are all bloody?" He says. I wince at the memories swimming just beneath my surface.

"Alright," he says swooping me off of the couch.

"No, Cole, I-I can't" I explain. "It hurts, my back".

"Okay, just let me see," he says.

"No, you can't" I protest.

"I won't touch, just let me see, I'm trying to help you" he draws me into his chest.

I squeeze my eyes shut "fine, but don't touch.

He sits me back down. I catch my breath as he slowly moves the blanket.

I hear him take in the quietest breath and then there's silence. Then after a long stretch he says "Uhh, umm, okay. I know I said I wouldn't touch, but I need to undo your bra" he says.
