Not a spoiler technically. The most dedicated ones know. ;)

I pressed my clammy hands together, trying to stop the tingling in the tips of my fingers that always occurred when I was nervous. I had to remind myself that there was nothing to be scared of. I nailed all my tests in the academy, I nailed all the exercises, I'm smart, I'm capable, and they chose me for a reason.

However, no matter how much I repeated that to myself, there was always this nagging voice in the back of my head that told me those guys, my superiors, have made a mistake. They may have made a mistake while choosing me for the upcoming task. I'm just a rookie. I have started working here just a month ago. How am I supposed to accompany this really successful and famous officer on this mission? I'm just a kid!

After carefully considering which office I'm supposed to enter, I wrapped my fingers around the knob and turned. The door opened with a creak and the silence that was induced by that very creak overwhelmed me. I smiled awkwardly and stepped inside, noting the many officers that were scattered around the room. Upon my entrance, those who were sitting stood up and those who were already standing nodded their heads. "Good morning, (L/N)-san," the chief inspector said, greeting me professionally by reaching his hand out over his desk for me to shake. I took it firmly in my own and nodded at him.

"This is inspector Sawamura. He'll be your superior on this case," he said and motioned over to a guy that stood next to the desk. I turned my head and looked at the inspector. He was fairly tall with a large build. He had wide shoulders and strong arms. He looked really powerful but his soft brown eyes gave me an impression he was very reliable, too. He offered me a kind smile, one that I learned was rather rare among the police here, and then took my hand to shake it.

"He will tell you everything you need to know. You shouldn't have trouble following his instructions. Here's the file on the case," he handed me a file and as I took it from him, he let go of it too early, making the papers slip out of my grasp. I gasped as they all scattered around and quickly picked them up, making sure I got all of them. "I'm so sorry about that, sir. I'll go and look over this case file now," I said and excused myself with embarrassment making me feel like I was burning in the deepest pit of the hell. The Chief Inspector nodded and let me leave while inspector Sawamura just shook his head lightly.

I'm such a failure. Why did they pick me in the first place?

When I stepped out of the office, I groaned loudly and leaned against the wall to cool myself off. I can't believe I have just done that. As I continued imagining banging my head on the wall, I caught the conversation between my two superiors. "Is she even going to be alright? Do I really have to work with her? This is not an easy case," the unfamiliar voice, of whom I assumed was inspector Sawamura, said and I froze in my spot. I knew he would not want to work with me. "Of course, she's going to be alright, Daichi. Don't let her lack of experience fool you. She was the top of all her classes and in the month she has worked here, she did some amazing things. Besides, if there's a person that can get her in check better than you, I'm willing to leave this job right now."

I sighed upon hearing that. At least Chief inspector liked me. I squared my shoulders and fanned my face before walking back to my desk. I dropped the file and started slowly going through all the papers. It took me no time to go through it and arrange the papers once again. The case was complicated, it included a bunch of false leads and so far they were only able to narrow it down to three suspects. However, upon further inspection, it clicked in my head. My mind was racing. The thrill of solving mysteries was bringing a smile to my face. Too bad I was only solving the mystery of a drug lord. My ultimate goal was to actually be a detective but to get to that level, I first needed a lot of experience.
