First of all, let me just say that a LGBTQ+ character is no different than a character who isn’t. A character’s sexuality or what they identify themselves as should make them no different from any other characters, because everybody is equal.

Don’t leave out their backstory. If s/he is coming out, you have to know the history that led to this moment. If they aren’t coming out, the same. If they are pursuing love for the first time, what motivated them to finally take action?

Don’t add a gay character just to have a diverse story. Add a gay character because they’re gay.

Don’t stereotype. For example, not all gay people are flamboyant, though a lot of people stereotype them to be such a way.

Lastly, their interests or personality should matter just as much as any other character, and they shouldn’t only be classified as the “gay” character.

They’re more than their sexuality.
