A/N - This chapter is based on the song 'She' by Dodie. It's a little short, but I hope you all enjoy it.
You had never been in love before. Not really. Sure, you'd loved people, the way that you had been told you should love them, but it had never really meant anything. They were nice enough people, the kind of man your mother would have been happy to see you married off to. But perhaps that was the issue. So, you would continue to chase the picture perfect relationship, hunting it down until what you had wasn't ever quite enough anymore, and then everything would fall apart.
Every relationship you had ever experienced had ended badly. It was always yelling and crying and harsh words from both of you, and each time, it was enough to make you swear off of dating completely. And then you would meet someone else who thought you hung the moon, and you would go through the motions all over again, knowing deep down that it would end in disaster.
And then you had been introduced to Wanda. You had been single for all of a month, and had made it very clear that your friends should knock some sense into you if you expressed interest in getting into another relationship before the end of the year, but she had taken your breath away before she had even looked in your direction.
She was stunning. The kind of beauty that had left you unable to look away, so focused on her that you were certain it was becoming a little too obvious to the people around you. Your eyes would flit from one feature to another, each more beautiful than the last, though it didn't seem possible.
When she had eventually looked back at you, your head had whirled. For a moment, you'd just continued to stare, all wide eyed and startled, and then she had smiled, and your heart had melted.
No. You were certain you had never been in love before her. There had never been another soul who could so effortlessly bring joy into your life. Never seen someone light up a room with their smile, and chase away the negativity that so often lingered in the dark recesses of your mind.
"What are you thinking?"
You startled at the words, sitting up a little straighter at the table and glancing over at Wanda, who was watching you with a small smile. You hummed slightly, shrugging. "Nothing," you uttered, attempting to keep your voice even as she narrowed her eyes at you. She didn't believe you, you knew as much the moment your answer had left your tongue, but she wouldn't push, wouldn't delve into your mind without your permission.
"You looked pretty happy," she murmured, gathering the two empty mugs from the table as moving over to the sink.
For a moment, you considered blurting out your thoughts. Wanda meant the world to you, and no one had ever made you feel so simultaneously happy and terrified. But that was just the issue, wasn't it? How could you ever tell her how you felt without scaring her away? Without losing the one person that gave you something to look forward to?
"That's just my face," you hummed, sitting back slightly as you watched her. No, it would be safer to never tell a soul about how you felt about Wanda. Sure, you would have to watch her fall in love with someone else, and live a life that you craved, but you wouldn't have to lose her. You could watch her from a distance; admire her from afar.
Wanda chuckled slightly, glancing over her shoulder at you with a toothy grin. "And a lovely face it is, too," she told you, watching as you rolled your eyes at her. "Come on, tell me what you're thinking," she pushed on, pausing mid-chore to face you properly, her hands bundled up in a tea towel. Her head tilted to the side as you frowned slightly.
"It's nothing," you told her again, forcing the frown away in an attempt to plaster on a happy facade for her. "Just thinking about whether I'm going to go see my parents for the holidays."
Wanda continued to stare for a moment, before giving a sharp nod. "Well, you know you're always welcome to join me and Vis, if you decide to stick around," she started, and God, it was like a punch in the gut. A reminder as to exactly why you could never confess your love for her. Vision. In all honesty, you couldn't even bring yourself to dislike him. He was always so kind to you, even when you were acting like a bitter child who couldn't get their own way.
"No," you murmured, shifting uncomfortably in your seat. "Mum keeps asking me to come home for a visit. I might as well make a weekend of it."
"Oh," Wanda uttered. "Yeah, of course."
She looked so disappointed that you wanted to take back the words immediately. Wanted to apologise for being so incapable of spending time alone with her and her boyfriend without having a mental break at the end of it. But then she had plastered a smile onto her lips.
"Just let us know if you change your mind."
