A/N - This chapter was inspired by the song Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift. I hope you all enjoy it.
You weren't exactly certain which of you had been the first to make a move. Part of you wanted to believe that it was Sam, slipping into your room one night for a little bit of comfort and ending up huddled up in your bed, warm and safe, trying to forget about the immense pressure that Steve had put on him by handing over the shield.
The other part knew all too well that you had been in love with Sam Wilson from the very first time you had met. He'd been sweet and funny and handsome as hell, and your heart hadn't stood a chance.
After that first night, he'd started coming to you for comfort more often. He would sleep in your bed more often than he slept in his own, pulling you in close and burying his face into your collarbone, pressing gentle, sleep-addled kisses to the bare skin. And it wasn't exactly like you were trying to tell him no, either.
You were more than happy for him to invade your personal space and hold you close. In fact, you were pretty sure that if he stopped showing up now it would break your heart. It would completely devastate you. It wasn't even worth thinking about.
"Let's get out of town for a while," he murmured one evening, his lips still brushing against your skin as he wrapped his arm over your waist, drawing you in closer. "Drive out of the city and just keep going until we find somewhere interesting, you know?" he hummed, pulling his head back just enough to look up at you, silently pleading that you would stay at his side whilst he got his head on straight. "It'd be nice to get away from the crowds, right Princess?"
You hesitated for a moment, your fingers lifting to brush over his jaw, and then a soft smile pulled at your lips. "Okay," you told him, watching as his lips twitched ever so slightly. "We could go West; see if we can reach the other coast," you added, your words trailing off when he craned his neck to press a kiss to your lips.
"Sounds like a pretty good plan to me," he hummed, before shuffling back into that well-rehearsed position. The one that always calmed your racing heart and lulled you off to sleep.

Sam sitting in the driver's seat of your rental car, music playing softly in the background, and the windows down, wind whistling as you sped down the highway, was possibly one of the most incredible things you had ever experienced.
You'd gotten out of the city pretty quickly, winding down the windows the second you'd reached the suburbs. He'd handed over the aux cable almost immediately too, with some muttered comment about how you always knew what he wanted to listen to anyway, and then he'd put the car into drive and you'd been off.
It was funny. You'd never really thought of just driving aimlessly as relaxing before, but now, you were pretty sure that there was nothing in this world that was more relaxing than what you were currently experiencing.
"So, we have a couple of choices to make, Princess," Sam hummed, knocking you out of your blissful staring and back into the moment. "Either," he pressed on. "We go up through Ohio and Indiana, and then we can take a nice amble through the Northern states. Or, we go down through West Virginia and Kentucky and take in all the Southern states."
You hesitated for a moment, just watching as he smiled out of the windshield. He'd not seemed so at peace in weeks, always on edge and nervous, but right now he just looked like him again. It was refreshing.
"You look so cute when you zone out like that," he uttered again, flashing you that perfect smile full blast. "So, what do you think? North or South?"
A soft hum slipped out of you and you offered up a small shrug. "Honestly, as long as it's with you, I don't mind either way."
Sam stayed silent for a moment, his smile somehow growing, though you hadn't thought it possible. "Okay, Princess," he murmured, reaching out to give your knee a light squeeze. "Southern States it is."
"Perfect."

You'd been on the road for about a week when you'd pulled into one of the most stunning parking spots you'd ever seen. Shit, it had to be in the top 5 best places to park in the world. Maybe even top 3.
Overlooking a landscape that was only ever dreamt of in New York, it was like nature had come together to create the perfect backdrop for your evening. The second you had gotten out of the car, your eyes had focused on it, too. You couldn't have asked for better timing, really. The sky was painted with more colours than you could count. Pinks and reds and purples and oranges, all blending in to create the prettiest sunset you had ever seen.
You moved towards the railing, leaning against the warm metal barrier and letting out a gentle sigh. You'd seen some beautiful places in the last week, but this beat them all. Nothing else compared. Nothing else would ever come close.
And then you'd heard the tell-tale sound of an iPhone camera going off, and your head span to find Sam grinning down at his phone. He glanced up at you, holding up the screen to you. "Stunning," he hummed, pocketing his phone and moving up behind you, wrapping his arms around your body with his weight leaning on the railing. "God, this place is perfect," he added, pressing a soft kiss to your shoulder.
"I've never seen anything like it."
He hummed out an agreement, pulling one arm away from the railing to wrap it around your middle, his chin resting on your shoulder. "We could move out here, Princess," he murmured. "Some day, when we've saved up some money. We could get normal jobs and then when we got off work, we could just drive out here to watch the sunset."
"Is that what you want to do? Live a normal life?" you started, your voice softer than silk. "I can't imagine you working in an office," you added, a hint of teasing laced into your words. "Wearing a suit and tie every day. Dealing with all the office politics and bickering."
"I could put up with it if it meant I got to be here with you every night," he hummed. "And we could buy a place out here. We could afford a house. A place we could have kids-"
"Kids?" you chuckled, nodding. "You've really got this all thought out, huh?"
He hesitated for a moment, pressing his lips to your shoulder. "Been thinking about it since that first night."
You nodded. "Give me a couple of years and we can start talking kids, alright?"
You felt his lips turn up into a smile against your skin. "Alright, Princess."
