A/N - This chapter is based on the song 'Like Toy Soldiers' By Eminem. It's a little short, but I hope you all enjoy it.
You had promised yourself that you wouldn't get involved in the growing tensions between Steve and Tony. You were happy to bury your head in the sand and act as though the whole thing wasn't happening. Eventually, you had told yourself, this would all blow over and they would be back to normal.
If you had known how wrong you would be, maybe you would have intervened. You could've knocked their heads together and told them to stop acting like children. It wouldn't have been that hard to coerce them into behaving like the heroes you knew them to be. But by the time you'd realised what was going on, it was far too late to stop it.
It wasn't until Captain America was a wanted man that you had really registered what was happening. The Avengers were gone, and now you were stuck listening to Tony bitching his way around the Compound, trying to lure anyone who would listen.
"Tony," you had murmured one afternoon, your fingers rubbing against your temples in an attempt to evade the rising headache that had been growing for the last half-hour. "Can you just stop for five minutes?" you added, a frustrated sigh slipping out of you when he sent you a disapproving look.
"Oh, come on. It doesn't drive you insane knowing that he ditched us all to go running after this guy that barely even knows who he is. This guy that was trying to kill us all a couple of days ago."
"He's doing what he thinks is right-"
Tony snorted, shaking his head. "No, he's being selfish. He's putting himself and his stupid little bromance above the rest of the world."
"And you've never been guilty of that have you?" you bit back, your temper rising. "I'm not going to sit here and listen to you talk bad about Steve when he isn't here to defend himself, so could you just stop?"
"He left," he muttered, shrugging slightly. "I didn't make him go." He paused for a moment, shaking his head. "All he had to do was get over himself for five minutes and sign the accords, and-"
"And what, Tony?" you interrupted. "Surely you can't be so naive that you think that any of us would've been able to follow those rules. You think you could've seen someone getting hurt and done nothing?" He stayed silent as you fixed him with a stern expression, holding him in place. "You can disagree with him all you want, but you don't get to hate him for doing it. You made your choices and he made his. Now can you please drop it?"
Tony was glaring at you now, his jaw tight as you stared at him. "I should've known you'd take his side."
A snort of laughter slipped out of you and you shook your head in disbelief. "You know as well as I do that if it was the other way around I would defend you too. I'm so tired of the infighting, Tony. You're adults and you both need to start acting like it. How many more people have to get hurt because we can't stop fighting between ourselves?"
"He started it-"
"Grow up," you bit at him. "A couple of weeks ago you guys were basically best friends and now you're running around here bitching about him to anyone who feels obligated to listen. You're worse than little girls on the playground." You got to your feet, gathering up your stuff from the table in front of you. "I'm not listening to this anymore," you added. "Steve is my friend. He's your friend."
"Y/N," Tony started again, his expression pained rather than angry. "He's the one that left," he reminded you.
A soft sigh slipped out of you. "He wasn't exactly given much choice," you told him, your voice softer than it had been. "I know that it stings to realise you aren't his first priority, but you need to get over it. He didn't do this to hurt you and walking around here being bitter isn't helping anyone," you pressed on.
He nodded slightly, letting out a gentle grumble when you touched his elbow gently. "Sorry," he murmured, letting you pull him into a quick hug. "You think he'll come back?"
You shrugged, frowning slightly. "Not if he knows what's good for him. The second he walked through that door, Ross would be all over him. He needs to stay away."
"Right."
"It's not so bad, right? You've still got me," you teased, nudging him lightly and watching a small smile pulling at his lips.
"Oh God," he chuckled. "I wouldn't wish that fate on anyone," he joked, watching you chuckle at his comment.
"Asshole," you murmured, rolling your eyes playfully at him.
"Tramp," he uttered back, drawing a bright smile out of you.
You nodded slightly, shouldering your backpack. "I'll see you around, Tony," you hummed, making a beeline for the door and leaving him behind.
