A/N - This chapter is inspired by the song 'Excuse Me' by Nothing But Thieves. I hope you all enjoy it.

Stephen had always been a protective and attentive boyfriend. From your first date, he had settled into his role pretty effortlessly. An arm around your waist to keep anyone from getting too close for comfort. A wary eye following the guy who'd been a little too flirty with you at a party. Walking you home, even though it was a good couple of miles out of his way, and waiting outside until you'd locked the door behind you. God, he even protected you from yourself when you'd been way too hard on yourself in the past.

But when you'd gotten pregnant, it seemed that the gallant behaviour had only increased. Sure, sometimes he would get a little overzealous in his attempts to help, leaving you feeling a little useless as he busied himself around you. It made sense, after all, Stephen was a doctor with a basic understanding of the changes your body would go through, and he wanted to make life as easy on you as he possibly could.

It had taken you all of a week to convince him that you would be perfectly fine attending some hospital fundraiser with him. Not that you really enjoyed the evenings, but it would be nice to see some of his colleagues and get out of the apartment for a while.

"I'll call a cab-"

"Baby," you murmured, raising an eyebrow at him as you glanced up from the mirror, halfway through putting in your earring. "It's two stops on the A-train," you reminded him. "A cab's going to take twice the time and cost quadruple the price."

"But it gets so stuffy down there," he uttered, frowning slightly as you turned your attention back to your reflection in the mirror. "

You shrugged slightly. "I've been taking the Subway since I was a kid, Baby, it's never been an issue before," you told him, untwisting your necklace slightly. "It's not even dark yet; there's nothing to worry about."

Stephen moved a little closer behind you, his hands running over your shoulders as he let out a soft sigh. "Fine," he breathed out, leaning down and pressing a kiss to the crown of your head. "But we're getting a cab home. I'm not having you hobbling around the streets after a night in those death traps," he pressed on, knocking your heels with the toe of his dress shoes. It had been another disagreement you'd already had as you'd been getting ready. What if you fall? What if you twist an ankle? You'll be so uncomfortable. It had been a little frustrating listening to him list all of the issues that could possibly take place, but you'd eventually calmed his concerns, just as you had done with every other worry he'd had since you'd told him you were having a baby.

*Time Skip*

You'd walked to the station with your hand tightly grasping Stephen's, the way you always did when you walked anywhere, letting him steer you between other pedestrians and keeping you out of harm's way. It had become pretty common to spend most of your waking hours throwing about baby names, pinning them to your surname each time and trying to figure out what sounded good and what sounded absolutely ridiculous, and your little walk had been no different.

You were happily settled on the escalator, with Stephen turned around to face you as you continued nattering on, within ten minutes of settling on using the Subway.

"How do you feel about Florence for a girl?"you hummed, lips half-curled into a smile as you gazed down at him. "We could call her Flo-"

"Flo Strange?" he interrupted, holding back a peel of laughter when your eyes widened. "Florence is pretty, but I'm not sure it works, Sweetheart," he chuckled.

As you let out the snort of laughter, you felt someone knock into your shoulder, sending you teetering forwards. In all honesty, you had been lucky that Stephen had insisted on going in front of you, because his hands were steadying you a second later, his head turning to the side to catch sight of the man who had gone barrelling past you, right as the escalator evened out onto flat ground.

He lead you off of the steps quickly, his eyes never leaving the man, who after all of his rushing, was now lingering at the subway map, his attention focused on the colourful routes.

"Hey, Asshole," Stephen started, completely missing the way your eyes widened as he marched over in the direction of the man.

"Stephen," you started, your voice a low warning as you followed behind him, teetering along on your heels.

Stephen shoved him hard in the shoulder, finally catching his attention. "Watch where the fuck you're going," he spat, his voice full of a venom you had never heard before. "You went fucking barging past her," he pressed on, nodding his head in your direction. "She almost fell; you could've hurt her. You could've hurt the baby," he pressed on, his voice rising as he grew red in the face.

"Baby, I'm fine," you uttered, reaching forwards and taking his hand in yours. "Please, let's just go."

He let out a deep, shaking breath, turning his attention back to you for a moment. "Sweetheart-"

"Yeah, do as the girl says and fuck off, tough guy," the other man finally uttered, a smirk plastered on his face as he watched your hand tense around Stephen's arm.

"Baby," you warned low in your throat. "We're going to be late," you pressed on. "Just leave it."

Stephen reached down with his free hand, untangling your grip from him as gently as he could manage. And then, as soon as you were out of harms way, he was launching at the other man, his hand wrapping around his throat as he shoved him back against the wall.

"Apologise to her," he growled, fingers tightening around the other man's windpipe. "Now," he added, and the man's eyes flickered over to you, all wide and scared.

"I'm sorry," he cried out, his fingers digging into Stephen's hands as he grappled to free himself. "I'm sorry," he repeated.

A moment later, you were rushing forward to grab onto your husband's bicep, tugging at his suit jacket. "Stephen stop," you yelped, pulling a little harder on his arm. "Stephen Vincent Strange, put him down," you finally barked, watching as his hand immediately loosened it's grip.

"Watch where you're going next time, Asshole," he bit out releasing the man completely and shoving him backwards as he turned to face you. God, you looked so mad, your face all stoney and painted with a deep frown. "Sweetheart-"

"Not now," you murmured, glancing behind him as the other man scurried away. "We missed our train," you added, pulling your bottom lip into your mouth as you glanced away from him for a second. "We're going to be late," you added, your voice breaking slightly as you spoke.

"We'll get a cab-"

"We'll still be late," you interrupted. "I want to go home," you finally murmured.

Stephen's brow furrowed as his eyes scanned over you. "Are you okay? Is the baby okay?"

You swallowed down the lump in your throat, holding back the tears that wanted to overflow. "Please, I just want to go home."

"Okay, we can go home," he hummed, reaching out his hand for you to take, only for you to brush past it on your way to the escalators.

The walk back from the station to your apartment had been silent, without even a hint of the excited chatter that you'd shared on the way there. And once you were inside, the door shut behind you, Stephen had let out a soft sigh.

"I'm sorry-"

"I'm not angry," you interrupted. "I thought I was falling and I was scared." You shook your head slightly. "And then I was scared that he was going to hurt you or something and it felt like I couldn't breathe properly."

"Oh Sweetheart," he hummed softly, reaching out and drawing you into his arms, holding you as close as he could get you with your swollen stomach cushioned between you. "I shouldn't have gotten so worked up," he uttered. "I should've checked that you were okay."

You tucked your face into his chest, taking a deep breath. "He was a dick," you murmured against him, feeling a rumble of laughter echo in his chest.

"He was," he agreed softly. "But I bet he'll think twice before barging past everyone from now on," he added, watching as you peeked up at him with a smile on your lips.
