A/N - This chapter was inspired by the song Late Night Talking by Harry Styles. I hope you all enjoy it.
After moving into the Avengers Facility, it hadn't taken long to realise that you were the only nighttime person living on site. As soon as 10 pm rolled around it was as if the entire place turned into a ghost town, giving you the run of the entire place, as long as you could keep the noise to a minimum.
You didn't mind it one bit. Being able to just sit uninterrupted for an hour or two, looking out over the grounds, was nice. Some nights, you would even bring a book out with you and unwind out on the sheltered patio with a blanket and a hot chocolate. It was, dare you say it, relaxing, which, in a building full of real-life superheroes, was a bit of a rarity.
It had taken three months of your nighttime excursions for anyone to notice. Sam had only been venturing into the common room to retrieve a forgotten sweatshirt when he'd noticed the light on out on the patio. Then, he's spotted the head above the back of the garden couch, tilted to the side and staring out into the dark grounds.
He approached quietly, taking a moment to realise it was you sitting on your own before he slipped through the open door and cleared his throat.
Your head turned at lightning speed, eyes locking onto him quickly and sending him a glare. He couldn't help the smile that pulled at his lips at your attempt to silently chastise him for surprising you. You looked so cute with a blanket wrapped around your shoulders and dressed in your pyjamas.
"What are you doing out here?" he hummed, moving to sit next to you, his legs propped up on the coffee table in front of you.
"Just watching," you murmured, turning your attention back out to the grassy expanse beyond the patio. "If you look really closely and stay really quiet, the bunnies start moving around out here," you added. "You scared them off," you told him, twisting around on the couch, your back rested against the arm so that you could face him properly. "What are you doing out here?"
Sam smiled as he leaned back slightly, making himself comfortable. "I just got done with a debrief and I was just going to grab my sweatshirt before heading to bed," he uttered, holding up the sweatshirt for you to see. "But now I'm going to sit here until I see one of those little bunnies hopping around," he added, listening to the soft snort of laughter you released.
"They won't come out if you keep talking," you chuckled, shaking your head slightly when he let out a dramatic sigh.
"Fine," he uttered, shuffling down in his seat, his eyes focused out on the darkness. You watched him carefully, sending you little glances from the corner of his eyes as you smiled over at him, waiting for him to crack and break his own oath of silence. "How long does this usually take?" he murmured, drawing a real laugh bubble out of you as you shook your head. "What?"
"Nothing," you chuckled, your smile still beaming in his direction. "It's just that I usually have to sit here for at least 20 minutes before they even consider making an appearance, and you lasted all of 30 seconds before caving-"
"Well, I can't just sit here with you staring at me and not say something, can I?"
You rolled your eyes at him, sinking down a little further under your blanket. "Well, if you have to talk, you should do it quietly," you told him, lowering your voice slightly. "Keep your voice light and soothing and they might not mind it so much."
"My voice is always light and soothing," he grumbled, attempting to copy your tone as he attempted to shift into a position that mimicked yours, his body facing towards you. "So, you really come out here a lot?"
You glanced back out at the landscape as you nodded. "I've always been a bit of a night owl," you told him, a lazy smile pulling at your lips. "And I can't stand spending all my time in my bedroom, you know? I like being out in the fresh air and hearing all the sounds-"
"Crickets were my favourites growing up," he interrupted. "You probably don't get them around here so much."
"You can hear them sometimes; if you listen really carefully," you corrected. "But usually it's the birds that make the most noise out here. And the trees."
"The trees?"
You nodded, turning your attention back to him. "Well, I guess it's more the wind than the trees, but they're always rustling around, and everything is so quiet when the others go to bed that you can actually hear it."
He stayed quiet, listening intently to the world around him. "Huh," he murmured, shuffling in his seat slightly. "I never noticed that before. Kinda forgot we had trees around here-"
"How are you not falling asleep right now?" you interrupted, your intrusive thoughts getting the better of you before you could catch them. "I mean, you were on a mission all day, right? And then you had to travel back. And then the debrief. Aren't you exhausted?"
He shrugged slightly. "I'm more of a night person, too. But I kinda just stick to my room; keep out of the way."
"Oh-"
"If I'd known you were hanging out here, I would've come out sooner. This is much better than just staring at a screen all night," he told you.
A small smile pulled at the corners of your lips, your head tilting to the side slightly. "Well," you hummed. "You're more than welcome to join me out here whenever you want. I've missed the company." You shuffled to your feet, gathering up the blanket in your arms. "I do have an early meeting tomorrow, though, so I should probably get to bed."
"Same place tomorrow?" he uttered, watching as you padded towards the door.
"Absolutely," you told him, your eyes wandering back over to the grass for just a second. "Don't get too excited, but the bunnies are back," you started again, your smile so bright that he had to fight to look at where you were staring. Sure enough, there were three little bunny rabbits, hopping around on the lawn, looking happy enough to be sharing the night with the two of you.
Sam glanced back up at you, smiling sweetly for you. "Well, that's my life made," he hummed. "It doesn't get any better than this."
A bubble of laughter slipped out of you as you slid the door across as quietly as you could manage. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Sleep well."
You hesitated, in the doorway, risking another glance out at him. "Sweet dreams."
