A/N - This chapter is a follow up to another in this book. I would highly suggest reading that one first. This one is actually more of a Bucky X Reader, but I didn't want the change the name of the original chapter to correlate. I hope you all enjoy it.
The plane was completely silent as it carried you and the team to your next destination. You hadn't really expected Tony to put up such a good fight. Sure, you'd known there would be some resistance, but you'd assumed he would drop away before anyone could get hurt. But now here you were, worrying your ass off about everyone you had left behind at the airport, isolated with Steve and Bucky, and praying that eventually you would all be able to go back to normal.
But God, what could even be considered normal now that you'd all taken to beating the shit out of one another? Now that you'd divided yourself straight down the middle? Now that you were on the run with the entire world looking for you?
"You good?" You startled slightly, your head shooting up to find Bucky watching you from the other side of the plane, his face taught, concern painting his features. You forced a smile onto your lips, giving him a quick nod. "Come on," he hummed, offering up a small smile of his own as he kicked at your foot with the toe of his boot. "We talked about this; you aren't good enough at lying to get away with it."
A snort of laughter slipped out of you and you quickly caught yourself. You shouldn't be laughing, not when your entire life is falling apart around you. Finally you released a sharp sigh, sitting up and running your hands over your face, attempting to regain some composure. "Those people were my friends a couple of days ago," you uttered, giving a sharp shrug. "It's weird to think that they might resent me now," you added, biting down on the inside of your lip as his smile slipped away.
"I shouldn't have let him drag you into this-"
"You wouldn't have been able to stop me," you interrupted, shaking your head. "I'm far too foolish to ever make a good life decision, especially when I'm convinced I'm doing the right thing." You paused for a moment, letting out another sigh. "I'm a grown up, and I made the decision to help you on my own. Please, don't start blaming yourself for that."
He nodded slightly, watching as you finally offered up a proper smile, even if it wasn't quite as full as it would have been before everything had started going wrong.
You opened your mouth as if you were about to say something more, and then Steve was moving towards the two of you, slumping down next to Bucky and releasing a deep breath. "We've got a long journey ahead of us," he uttered, his head falling back against the head rest with a soft grunt. "Should be landing in just under 5 hours-" he added, his words trailing off into nothingness.
The three of you sat quietly for a moment, and then you were on your feet and moving further down the plane, attempting to find somewhere to sit where you wouldn't have to look in Steve's direction. It was safe to say that the attempt at sleeping away your sadness hadn't worked the night before. In fact, you'd barely slept at all, playing back the night you had confessed your feelings on a loop. You'd realised, at around three in the morning, that Steve had never actually told you that he felt the same way about you that you did about him, and then you'd just gotten so mad at yourself that sleep became completely unreachable.
"Was it something I said?" he hummed, and your entire body went rigid, braced against the sway of the turbulence.
"Don't-" Bucky started, and without even turning around you could already hear the way he was frowning at the idea of what was coming.
"Don't what?" Steve bit out, his eyes flickering between his best friend and you for a second. "I'm not doing anything."
Your jaw tensed at his comment. How on earth could anyone be so completely unaware of their own actions. "Are you really that clueless?" you muttered, finally turning to look at him, your hand braced on the ceiling. "Do you really not realise how much of an asshole you've been, or are you just being cruel?" you pressed on, watching his face contort in disbelief as you glared at him.
