A/N - This chapter is inspired by the song 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)' by Edison Lighthouse. I hope you all enjoy it.
There had never been a time in your life that you were more nervous than the day that Sam had introduced you to his friends. After all, falling in love with him had been effortless; so easy that it had almost shocked you when you realised that it had happened, without you having even noticed. And Sam held his friends, and colleagues, in such high esteem that you wanted nothing more than for them to like you.
Sam, on the other hand, didn't have a single anxious thought in his head. He had seen you interact with near strangers and leave the conversation with a new friend too many times to count, and he didn't doubt that your first meeting with Steve, Bucky, and Nat would go much the same way. After all, how could they not love you? Damn near everyone else did.
You had your fingers linked tightly through Sam's as he led you towards the elevator, ready to take you up to the top floor of the Avengers Facility. Once you were inside, he pressed the button, and you shuffled closer to him, tucking yourself into his side and sending him your sweetest smile from under his arm.
"You're so pretty," he hummed, lifting a hand to push some of your hair out of your face as he grinned down at you. "God, I'm such a lucky guy," he murmured, watching on fondly as you rolled your eyes at his comment. You always acted as though his cutesy little lines were so stupid; like they were the cheesiest things you had ever heard, and of course, they were, but that didn't mean you didn't love hearing them. Sam's little muttered sweet nothings were some of the nicest things you had ever heard from anyone, and knowing that he truly meant them left you a little flustered at times.
"You can't get all mushy like this in front of them," you started, your tongue darting out to wet your bottom lip. "I don't want them to think I've got you all whipped or something-"
"But Baby," he murmured, lifting his hand to cup your face. "You have got me whipped."
You rolled your eyes again, shaking your head. "You know what I mean," you muttered, letting out a soft sigh. "I don't want them to think I'm changing you or something-"
"Sweetheart, It's not like you've got me locked up in your apartment or you're forcing me to stop talking to my friends or something horrendous. Of course, I've changed; I fell in love with you." His lips turned up slightly when you released another soft sigh. "That's a good thing, and I promise you that they'll all agree with me on that."
You nodded, untangling yourself from his arms to move a little closer to the mirror lining the far side of the elevator and taking a deep, calming breath as you surveyed your features.
"You look beautiful," he hummed, drawing your eyes to his in the reflection. "And I'm pretty sure they're going to love you so much that they're going to be wondering why on Earth you chose to be with me," he added, watching as you rolled your eyes at him. The elevator dinged as you reached the top floor, and you quickly grabbed Sam's hand, linking your fingers tightly through his, completely unwilling to walk out into the room without him at your side. "Ready?"
As the doors slipped open, you took another deep breath and nodded. "Ready," you confirmed quietly, letting him lead you out of the elevator and into the hallway.
*Time Skip*
Sam had been right. His friends had been perfectly cordial from the moment you had walked through the door, curiously asking question after question and laughing politely when you would attempt to crack a joke. They were nice, but even that wasn't enough to put you at ease. After all, you had been the friend in this situation a thousand times over, and you would sit a smile through the interactions, knowing deep down that you were passing your true judgement silently.
So, when Sam had excused himself to go to the bathroom, you had been a little out of your element, clinging to his hand until the very last minute as he got out of his seat.
"You guys are cute," Nat started once he was out of earshot, a sweet smile painting her features as she watched you shuffling awkwardly in your seat.
You released a stunted chuckle and then shook your head, cursing your own ability to act even slightly normal around these people. "Sorry," you murmured softly. "I've been so nervous about meeting you guys. Sam talks so highly of all of you-"
"You were nervous?" Bucky chuckled, interrupting your stream of consciousness. "Christ, all Sam ever does is talk about how incredible you are, we were all keyed up thinking you were going to hate us."
"You're a huge part of Sam's life; the guy adores you. We didn't want to mess that up for him by making a bad first impression," Steve added, and you let out a relieved sigh. "Honestly, you have nothing to worry about. You guys are great together."
You felt your entire body relax as you smiled at the three of them. "He has a type, huh?" you teased, shaking your head at your own stupid joke.
"And clearly he has great taste," Nat agreed, sending you a small wink as she took a sip from her drink.
You startled slightly when Sam placed his hand on your shoulder, and you looked up at him with a small smile. "You ready to go, Baby?"
"Yeah." You knocked back the last couple of sips from your glass and offered his friends your widest smile. "Thank you guys for tonight. I had a great time."
"You're welcome anytime," Steve told you as you gathered up your bag and jacket.
"Yeah, you don't even have to bring Sam if you don't want," Nat added, causing a snort of laughter to slip out of you when he grumbled in protest. "I'm serious," she teased. "I need more women around here, and these two won't be settling down and bring anyone around any time soon," she pressed on, gesturing towards Steve and Bucky.
You were still chuckling when Sam wrapped his arm around your shoulder, tucking you into his side. "Find a girl of your own, Romanoff. This one's mine."
"I don't know," you hummed softly, glancing up at him with your sweetest smile plastered on your lips. "Nat seems like she could be very persuasive."
Sam's hand free hand lifted to press over his heart, a faux wince playing across his features. "You really gonna do me like that, Baby?" he asked. "God, that's mean," he added, drawing a soft chuckle out of you.
You shrugged slightly. "Alright Drama Queen," you started, stearing him towards the door. "Let's get you home."
Sam hummed out an agreement, leaning down to press a kiss to the top of your head, and waving behind him with his free hand. "See you guys later," he called out. Once you'd settled yourselves into the elevator, Sam released you, turning to face you properly. "I hate to say 'I told you so', but-"
"No you don't; you love being right, on the rare occasion that it actually happens," you interrupted, craning your neck to kiss him properly. "But, I guess you were right this time," you murmured against his lips. "Your friends are great."
"Yeah," he agreed, nudging your nose with his. "And they all loved you."
