The day that you had found out that you were pregnant had to have been the most terrifying day of your life. Sure, to a lot of women, discovering that you were carrying the baby of your best friend and long-term boyfriend, it would be utterly joyful. But in all honesty, you couldn't remember a time that you'd ever even discussed the idea of children with Tony, and now your mind was racing as you tried to figure out some sort of plan.
Part of you wanted to go running straight to him, to confess your little secret and let him make the decisions for you, but the idea of him turning you away had kept coming crawling back. If he left, your heart would be broken, and you couldn't imagine ever loving someone else the way that you loved Tony. You had always thought that he was too good for you, and had been terrified that he would eventually realise, and if there was a good chance that this could be the catalyst. God, you felt sick.
So, you'd thrown out the tests, buried them amongst the rest of the weeks rubbish, and gone about your life in hopes that maybe if you hoped hard enough the problem would resolve itself.
And then Nat had gone all international super spy on you and figured it out.
She'd been watching you all morning, her eyes following the way you moved with such precision that if you'd noticed it probably would've been a little unnerving.
"What are you hiding?" she started, drawing you attention over to her as her brows furrowed slightly, her eyes narrowed at you. You attempted to mask the surprise at being caught out, to act nonchalant in the hopes of throwing her off the sent, but your eyes widened, just enough that she could catch sight of it.
"Nothing-"
"Come on, tell me," she uttered, watching as you swallowed down the sick feeling rising in your throat. "We both know you'll give in eventually, so just save us both some time and-"
"I'm pregnant," you interrupted, and Nat reared back slightly, her face contorted in surprise. "But Tony doesn't know, so you've got to keep it to yourself, alright?" You sighed when she just kept staring at you. "Pick up your jaw and quit acting weird. People'll start asking questions."
Nat shook her head slightly, blinking as she tried to make sense of what you were telling her. "I didn't think you'd actually give in that quickly," she hummed, causing you to snort slightly. "Why haven't you told Tony?"
Your smile dropped, and you shrugged. "I'm not ready yet."
"Is it not his?"
You slapped her arm, glaring at her. "Of course it's his. Who else would I be having a baby with?" Nat held up her hands in surrender, watching as you expression softened. "It's just-" you sighed, pausing for a moment. "We've never even talked about having kids. And if he decides he doesn't want this, or he leaves, I-" your lip quivered as you shrugged again. "I can't tell him yet. I'm not ready."
"Sweetheart," Nat started softly, reaching out to take your hand in hers. "Tony adores you. He has done since he first set eyes on you. He's not just going to go running off because he got you pregnant."
"But what if he asks me to get rid of it? I don't think I could do that-" Your words caught in your throat, and you shook your head slightly.
"You know, the more you delay, the harder it'll be. You just need to rip off the bandaid and deal with whatever comes next." She paused for a moment, watching your tight expression, your brow furrowed as you considered her comment. "And whatever does come next, we're all going to be here to support you, okay? No matter what Tony says."
You nodded, letting her pull you into a tight hug.
*Time Skip*
God, by the time Tony got home, you'd have probably picked away your nails completely. Nat had been right, the longer you waited, the more anxious you were getting, and now you were practically vibrating with the nervous energy coursing through you.
And then you'd heard his keys turning in the lock and you wanted nothing more than to pretend like nothing was wrong.
"Hey, Beautiful," he hummed as he swung the door open, dropping his keys onto the hook by the door and making a bee-line for you. But as he leant in to kiss you, you pressed a hand to his chest, holding him at a distance.
"I need to tell you something," you started softly, taking a deep, calming breath.
"Can it wait, Baby. I just want a kiss-
"If I don't tell you now, I'll never do it," you interrupted, watching as his brow furrowed slightly. He nodded for you to continue, and you opened your mouth but nothing would come out. "I-" you uttered, biting down on your lip as the panic came rushing back to the surface. "Shit," you murmured. Your throat felt tight, your head all cloudy, and God, there came that sick feeling again.
Tony looked so concerned that you couldn't help but feel a little guilty for getting yourself so worked up and stretching it out for so long. "Baby-"
"I'm pregnant," you finally yelped out, your mouth falling open once the words were out, eyes fixed on his face, waiting for some sort of reaction.
"You're pregnant?" he murmured, watching as you nodded slightly. And then the most beautiful smile you had ever seen pulled at his lips, and you felt your entire body relax. "Baby," he hummed, his hands lifting to touch your face. "You're pregnant," he repeated, a small chuckle falling from his lips when you nodded again.
"Is that okay?"
Another laugh slipped out of him, and he nodded. "It's more than okay. It's perfect." He leant in, finally getting the kiss he had been waiting for since he'd walked through the door. "I love you so damn much," he breathed out, his lips still brushing yours.
