You stayed quiet as you entered the briefing room, watching as Captain Rogers fiddled with the map on the desk, a deep frown on his lips. Sergeant Barnes was standing beside him, seemingly uninterested in his friend's lack of understanding of privacy.

"We can fly in stealth, land the jet here," Steve uttered, tapping his finger against the glossy paper spread out in front of him. "Close enough to trek in, far enough away that we won't be noticed."

"Shouldn't we wait for the Major-"

"I'm sure he won't mind a little bit of input," Steve interrupted his friend. "We could surround the place pretty easily," he continued. "I'll take the West entrance; you can take the North. The Major and his men can take East and South-"

Steve's words dropped off when you cleared your throat, his head popping up from the map to look at you. In all fairness, you weren't in uniform. It wasn't a requirement at a briefing, and when you intended on going down to the gym straight after the meeting, it would be more of an inconvenience than anything else.

His hand immediately shot out, folding the map over on itself to hide it from your view. "Ma'am, this is a confidential meeting-"

"I'm well aware of that, Captain," you hummed, moving further into the room and dumping your bag into one of the seats. "I scheduled it."

His brow furrowed for a second, and you watched as Bucky stood up a little straighter. "Oh," Steve uttered. "Is the Major not coming?"

"Steve-" Bucky started, hesitating when you shot him a stern look.

"Sweetheart," you muttered, tilting your head to the side with a small smile. Steve still looked confused, and you couldn't help the chuckle the bubbled out of you. "I am the Major. It's interesting to me that despite your time in modern society, you've not quite grasped modern gender roles yet."

Steve's eyes widened, his mouth dropping open as he searched for anything to say that would get him out of the hole he had dug himself into. "I didn't mean-"

"If you start trying to come up with silly excuses I will kick you off of this mission right now," you interrupted. "You two are here because I need people who understand how Hydra works, and you're two of the best people for that. Don't make me regret my decision."

"Yes, Ma'am."

You clapped your hands together, a bright smile on your lips. "Perfect. Now, find yourselves a seat, and I'll get on with the briefing."

*Time Skip*

The plan had been going perfectly. So perfectly, in fact, that something seemed off. It was rare for a mission to go so effortlessly right, not a single hitch in sight. You paused, raising a hand to stop Steve and Bucky, your eyes scanning the building up ahead. The base was supposed to be teeming with life. There should have been scientists and guard taking up every inch of space, and yet, there was no movement at all.

"Something's wrong," you murmured, your tongue darting out to wet your lips as you focused in on one of the top floor windows, empty except for an awkward dark shape in the bottom left corner.

You heard Steve's breath hitch at the same time as the realisation hit you. There was a sniper aiming straight at you, and if there was one, the likelihood was, there were plenty more, all a little better hidden than the first.

"Get back to the jet," you cried out, hitting the ground a second before the first whistle went soaring through the air. You felt Steve grabbing for you, his hand wrapping around your arm and dragging you towards a thicket of trees nearby. "Sniper," you uttered as you leant heavily against the trunk, taking a shaking breath. "Top window. Third from the left." You paused when you saw the tight expression on his face, his eyes focused on your shoulder as he fumbled in his pack for something. "They knew we were coming," you finally breathed out, wincing as you felt pain sear up in the exact spot he was watching.
