A/N - This chapter is my attempt to get into a summery-mood, even though the weather in England is currently being very English (Gloomy and Gross) It's based on the song 'Under The Sun' by Cheryl. I hope you all enjoy it.
In your opinion, the best part of living at the Avengers Facility wasn't the high tech security systems, or the beautiful architecture. It wasn't even the fascinating and, on occasion, bewildering company that came with living in a shared space. No, the best part was the outdoor pool that you had been longing to spend time at ever since the sun had started peaking it's head out through the clouds.
Now that summer was making itself known, you had plans to spend all of your free time, weather permitting, lounging around the pool and swimming to your heart's content. And it seemed that one of the other Avengers had a similar plan.
You'd made your way down one morning, hoping to make the most of your day of relaxation before the compound became home to the newest trainees that afternoon, and found that Steve had already beaten you to it. He was in the middle of swimming laps of the pool, the water sloshing merrily around as he sped through it. If it had been anyone else, you probably would have turned tail and run back to your room, but you knew he would be way too occupied with his exercise to interrupt your chilled out morning, and so you continued on, stretching your towel out on one of the beds that lined the edge of the pool.
For a moment, you let your eyes drift back to Steve, still swimming in circles. It was rare that you got the chance to look at him without him noticing, and Sam had already teased you for your 'staring issue' in the past. This was the perfect opportunity to just watch him, and what sane straight woman wouldn't watch a man like him? He was basically pure muscle, created out of some sort of dream, and even from this distance you could see each and every muscle working.
You sighed as you slumped down on top of the towel, pulling your eyes away from Steve as you opened up the book you'd brought down with you. You kept trying to read for a while, though the story didn't seem to want to stick in your head. The sound of Steve cutting through the water was a distraction enough, and it was like each word you read was drifting away the moment you passed it.
And then the sound had stopped, and curiosity had gotten the better of you. You peaked over the top of the book, finding Steve already looking in your direction.
"Morning," he hummed, his arm leaning on the edge of the pool as he pushed his wet hair back out of his face.
"Hey." You couldn't pull your eyes away from him, your lips twitching up into a small smile.
"Little early for sunbathing?" he asked, hauling himself out of the water and grabbing his towel from a nearby chair. "Sun's barely even out yet."
You shrugged slightly, your tongue darting out from between your lips as you finally managed to tear your gaze away. "Only time it's ever quiet out here," you uttered, lifting the book slightly. "And at this time of year, the sun's practically out 24/7," you added softly, watching as he slumped into the seat beside you.
"You've got a point-"
"I don't get how you can swim this early," you interrupted, your thoughts getting away from you before you could even register that he was talking. "I mean, isn't the water freezing?"
Steve's lips quirked up slightly at your comment, his body relaxing slightly. "Funnily enough, I'm used to cold water," he hummed, reaching out and taking the book from you. "The Nightingale," he read, nodding before handing it back. "What's it about?"
"It's about these two sisters who lived in Nazi occupied France," you started, turning the book over in your hands, your eyes lingering on it. "It's really good, I'll lend it to you when I finish it."
