A/N - This chapter is based on the song 'My Love Don't Cost A Thing' By Jennifer Lopez. I hope you all enjoy it.
When Tony had first started trying to win your affections, the flowers and chocolates had been a sweet gesture. Little tokens that told you that he was thinking about you, even when you had needed to delay your dates and hadn't been able to see each other for weeks at a time.
Of course, you had never admitted that he had won your heart on the first date. He had been so sweet, listening to you natter on about your work with this dopey smile on his face, so utterly absorbed in what you were saying that he had barely said a word. And then on the second date, you had confirmed your first thoughts when he had made you laugh so much that you had been crying at the table, drawing the glares of the other restaurant goers.
But now, after a couple of months of dating, and having made your relationship official, you were starting to grow uncomfortable with the sheer amount of money he was spending on you. Now, you never wanted to see ungrateful. Tony had a good heart, and some of the deepest pockets in the world, but some of the gifts were getting to be excessive. Jewellery, and bags, and clothes. And on one occasion a bracelet that you were pretty sure cost more than your rent that month.
It wasn't until he'd turned up in your apartment with a bright smile and a set of car keys tied up with a bright red ribbon that you'd finally decided that enough was enough.
"What are you doing?" you uttered, brow furrowed as he tried to lead you back outside to see your new car. "Tony," you repeated softly. "You can't just buy me a car; that's ridiculous."
He hesitated for a moment, his smile fading. "You kept complaining about that beat up old Ford Fiesta-"
"That doesn't mean you go and spend thousands of dollars on a new one without telling me," you bit out, shaking your head. "It's a lovely gesture, but I can't accept it," you murmured, softening your voice slightly.
Tony's tongue darted out to wet his lips. "But you wanted a new car."
"I know, but that isn't the point." You paused for a moment, attempting to get your thoughts straight in your head. "A car isn't a gift. I can't take something that expensive from you without feeling like I owe you something in return, and I can't afford to spend that sort of money."
"I don't expect anything back-"
"No, I know that, but I still feel so guilty when you're spending all this money, and I can't do the same." You swallowed around the lump in your throat. "I love you, Tony, and I don't need you to spend money on me for me to know that you love me too."
A small smile pulled at his lips as he watched you. "Think that's the first time you've actually said that to me," he hummed, shuffling on the spot. "I love you too," he uttered, finally giving in to temptation and closing the space between you, wrapping his arms around you.
"You need to return the car," you told him, your words muffled by his shoulder.
He pulled back slightly, glancing down at you. "They have a no returns policy," he murmured. "And I really would feel a lot better if you were driving around in a car that didn't break down once a week."
"Tony-"
"I know," he interrupted. "But what if it wasn't a gift? What if we share it and you can pay your half back in instalments, or something?" You considered his proposition for a moment, frowning as you worked out the logistics. "Come on, you can't keep driving that little death trap of yours."
You sighed. "Fine. How much did it cost?"
"It wasn't too bad," he started, pausing when you shot him a stern look. "A little under $22,000," he muttered, watching your expression soften slightly.
"Okay. So if we split it 50/50, that's $11,000-"
"Baby," he interrupted again, his hands rubbing at your arms. "Can we do logistics later? You just told me you loved me for the first time, and the numbers are killing the mood," he teased, leaning down to press a kiss to your neck. "Come on, Sweetheart. Say it again for me?"
You rolled your eyes, letting out a soft chuckle. "I love you, Tony Stark."
He let out a contented hum, pulling back slightly to press a kiss to your lips. "I love you so much, Baby."
