Of course, Lex did everything perfectly. We spent my day off alternating between relaxing and working, but even the reminder of what would come Friday wasn't enough to deter my splendid mood.

As suspected, the PAB was fucking phenomenal, and Lex took care of me with absolute devotion. Especially when he realized that my wrists and ankles were slightly bruised, which made him feel beside himself. It didn't matter how many times I'd told him it didn't hurt or that I marked easily. It seemed he couldn't bear the idea of leaving traces of pain on my body. He had absolutely no remorse about the sensations that lingered between my legs, though. It was like a persistent warmth, accentuated by simple movements like walking or sitting down.

Regarding the override key, he'd done his job well, and after a couple of attempts with the safe Eva had ordered for the hotel, it became clear that it should open Becker's as well. We worked on a few adjustments, including a way to erase the override command, so it wouldn't show in a backlog.

As we lied in bed in silence on Thursday evening, my anxiety only resurfaced. Because we'd been so incredibly close for the past twenty-four hours, I didn't hesitate to tell him what was on my mind. And I'd been right to, because he then proceeded to distract me and soothe my nerves with romantic love-making. He was sweet and gentle, which contrasted heavily with his dominant ways the previous time we'd been intimate.

Satisfied and relaxed, I'd fallen into a deep sleep, safely tucked into his familiar arms. Those moments only proved that we were favored by whatever deity ruled the world. Whoever was in charge up there, they would look after me and make sure I'd come back intact from my mission. Why would they orchestrate something as perfect as this relationship, only to have it burned to the ground before it could really start?

Given the strange situation, Lex accompanied me during my morning commute. The black SUV stopped a block and a half away from Becker's building, and I remained seated on the backseat, anxiously looking at the crowded streets outside. I made no move toward the door's handle, so he quickly realized something was off.

His hand cupped my face as he tenderly made me turn his way, his beautiful eyes meeting mine. "Andrea... I know you can do this, and I'll do my best to help you out. But if you want to cancel it all, I have no objections. You're the one who decides, my love."

"I will do it," I bravely said with a nod. "I just... Promise me it'll be fine. Promise me we'll get to go back home and have our lives back."

"There's nothing I want more than that, Andrea. We will expose this fucker to the world. We will annihilate him, make him history. But for that, we need the data. And only you can get it."

I gave him another nod, aware that this was our one and only shot. "I'll get it."

"My courageous little dork..." Ignoring the driver and Hank sitting in the passenger seat, Lex pulled me in for a soft kiss. He passed all of his strength, hopes, and love into it, leaving me feeling overcharged and electric. As he pulled away, I already felt better, some of my worries gone. "You go in there, get into that safe, and as soon as you have what we need, you leave. Pretend to have a headache or something and come back to me."
