how soul marks work:
They only appear on your wrists, so you can only have up to 2, if you have 2 they are also mated to each other. usually, one is born with them but they can appear as late as 16, there have been no recorded cases of marks appearing on anyone older than 16, those unlucky enough to not have any marks usually find other unmarked people and have a family while some don't care and start one with someone with soul+marks who haven't found their mates yet, yes it gets messy when they find them.
When one rejects their mate the mark will break in half.
the marks are still unknown to scientists so any little change can mean anything.
Only 100,000 out of a million people don't have marks. making a total of 78 million unmarked people (pre-z of course)
The mark doesn't burn when you get close, things seem to slow when you meet them.
If children are involved it's up to the parents to work it out, but the court usually sides with the mated couple over the un-mated parent.
