you walked into your house, sluggish, tired, hungry, all of the feels. the door closed behind you, and you locked it once it shut. you took your backpack off and left it by the staircase before taking your jacket off and hanging it on the coat rack. then, you slipped your sneakers off and put them on the shoe shelf that was beneath the coat rack.

"oh, she just walked in. want to talk to her?" you heard your husband's voice in his kitchen; the sound of cooking evident from a sizzling noise. "babe, your mom's on the phone," you heard him speak to you.

"tell her i'll call her in a bit," you replied and walked into the living room. while walking, you could see joshua at the stovetop cooking with his phone between his ear and shoulder.

"she'll call you in a bit. she just got home from working a double, so she's pretty tired," joshua said into the phone while moving the spatula in his hand.

you laid on the couch, covering yourself with the throw blanket.

just a quick nap...

"her birthday? we didn't plan anything yet. we weren't sure if she was going to have work yet or not," you heard your husband say to your mom. "i'll let you know what we plan on doing," he added. "sounds good. bye," he finished and you heard him put his phone down. "babe, still awake?"

"barely," you sleepily replied.

"can you stay awake enough for breakfast?" he asked you.

you sluggishly sat back up, reaching behind to take the clip out of your hair. your hair fell down, and you put the clip on the coffee table. you hummed in response to your husband, despite preferring to sleep first rather than eat.

"here."

you turned your head and saw joshua walking in with a plate in each hand. he was still wearing his sleeping attire, clearly ready to spend the day in the house.

"thanks," you replied and took the plate he held out towards you. the plate contained a breakfast sandwich and some hash browns on the side.

joshua sat down next to you, and both of you started eating together.

"what'd my mom ask you?" you asked him, having not paid attention to his conversation.

"oh, she was just wondering what we're doing for your birthday," he replied.

"my birthday?" you questioned.

"yes, your birthday. did you forget that it's on thursday?" he smiled as he spoke.

"no, i'm just surprised we would do something this year," you replied.

"you don't have work, right? maybe we should get lunch or dinner with your parents," joshua suggested and placed his plate onto the coffee table.

you nodded, "yea, that's fine with me."

joshua leaned in to kiss your cheek, "want your birthday present early?" he asked with a grin.

"but you're already right here," you replied to him.

both of you smiled at each other, and he wrapped his arm around you. then, he leaned in and kissed your forehead.

"you're too cute," he chuckled.

"i know i am," you responded before kissing him.
