"I see" , were Noah's first words when we got back to the white endless space of our dreams.

I sank to the floor, my hands ruffling my hair over and over, trying to put order in every vision we have experienced until this moment, and how we got this far.

Long ago, angels and demons lived in harmony. Humans' decisions on Earth and their fates were decided by the immortal creatures. They were the ones who whispered thoughts into mortal souls, telling them what to do, what to keep from doing. After death, depending on the human's achievements on Earth, if they were a bad person, they'll turn into a demon and head straight to the Core: the demons' headquarters. If the human was good-hearted, they would go to Heavens, where their souls would be converted into angel essence. The transformation came with amnesia. That's why angels and demons denied ever being human before. When Lailah became Queen, she was told by the Oracles to give birth to a halfblood after marrying a human. For some reason, a random human called Kai was chosen to be Noah's father. Meanwhile, one demon fell in love and hooked up with a human, which made everyone angry. This resulted in a War which lasted one year. In the middle of the war, when Noah was only an infant, he was kidnapped by his own human father then brought to the demons to be raised. The Oracles knew beforehand about this, but they did not tell Lailah. They crossed their arms and watched her heart break on her first and only child. Kai did this to get his revenge on the angel Queen because she only used his genes to produce a baby, never ever loving him. The war was getting a little harder to handle for the angels, so the Queen took the decision to close the gates once and for all to cut all creatures from going down to Earth. If there was no fighting ground, there was no fight, she thought. She didn't care about her angel guards being stuck on Earth. She just wanted everything to be over. Having lost their will to live, the immortals roamed earth, forgot their powers, their wings disappeared along with their memories, and they went back to being how they originally were: humans. However, there was one exception to this rule: Belleth. Belleth was a demon who fought in the frontlines in the War. He also happened to be my biological father. One night, he went out for a purpose yet unknown. As he was walking down a narrow dark alley, lit only by a flickering lamp post, he stumbled upon a horrible crime done by a serial killer: a decapitated woman's corpse. He, then, remembered who he truly was, and sought out a way to follow dead souls where they headed. He found himself in Heavens, and he was welcomed by none other than the Oracles themselves. They gave him a power I wish to not think about. A power to end the universe, and they told him to seek the only boy who could unlock it: Noah. He had long abandoned me and my mother, whom he killed in cold blood. I still do not know why he hadn't killed me too, on that day. Was he the one who left me on the Orphanage's doorstep? Did he know Aoki-sensei, one of his allies, would take care of me? I felt like those weren't the right questions to ask. Whoever left me there didn't matter. Cassiel-Obaa-chan, one of the Oracles, happened to live next to my old home. She took care of me like a mother, I loved her more than myself. I could tell, from the pieces of the puzzle we have been shown, that the Oracles were up to something bigger than all of us, angels, demons, Lailah, and even Belleth. We were mere tools in their grand scheme, and whatever they were keeping from us gave me chills. I knew they wouldn't hesitate to eliminate us if we didn't play the role we were given, even before our conception. Belleth didn't take immediate advantage of Noah simply because the boy was an empty shell, and the shell needed to be filled. I was the one girl he needed to complete that role. I filled Noah's heart with all sorts of human feelings, making him the perfect vessel for Belleth's immense powers.
However, there was one missing piece. Michael. Michael the angel Guard who was madly in love with Lailah. He teamed up with Kai, convincing him to kidnap Noah in the first place. Lailah's heart will be broken, the angel will be magically there to support her, and Kai will have executed his perfect plan to emotionally torture the Queen for all eternity, or at least until she found her son. In the glass house belonging to Cassiel, Michael had tried to kill me. Why? What threat did I make? Was it because I taught Noah how to be human? Was it because I made Noah the person he is today, and now Noah had to be killed, otherwise the angel race is threatened to extinction?
Did Michael really care about the angels, or did he only want to cuddle with Lailah?
"A test subject" , Noah echoed, over and over, his voice angrily filtering between his clenched teeth. I lift my head to watch him. His eyes were an active volcano, shining with a light as scarlet as rubies, their gleam making me instantly shut my eyelids, protecting them from blindness. I have never seen this intensity of a color before, in my lover's eyes. He looked around for something to punch, and not finding a single object, he grabbed his right black wing, attempting to pluck the feathers out, one by one. Tears fell down his cheeks from the pain. Yet, he kept doing it, his mouth tightly shut, his lips pursed, twisted into an unnatural grimace.
"Noah, stop!" , I shouted. I rushed to him, grabbing his wrists, keeping him away from self-harm. "Those belong to you now, it's your body. Don't hurt it"
I hugged him tighter, putting up one hand on his silky midnight hair, rummaging through his locks full of darkness, my other arm wrapped around his waist. My chest squeezed against his, our hearts touching, their beats in perfect sync with each other.
"My body doesn't belong to me. It never did. My body belonged to those who needed it."
"No" , I firmly said, my voice getting out half-angry, half-sobbing. "Your body doesn't belong to anyone but you. And me. It belongs to me too. Don't forget that"
That's when I heard him chuckle, and I knew I won.
"You're one naughty girl" , he whispered.
We fell on the hard white floor, my body on top of him, our wings hugging like a perfect imitation of Yin and Yang, Black and White, Angel and Demon. Except that I was once a half-demon, Noah was a half-angel, and now we were one single being, with thoughts that resonated together. I could feel his brain waves inside mine, and he could feel my heart beating for him.
Only for him.
Our lips connected, and he tasted like bittersweet chocolate, melting in your mouth like it has always belonged there. I had the urge to bite it, and I didn't resist.
"See? I won't let anyone use you the way I'm doing now" , I smirked, not recognizing myself in my words. Noah drove me out of my mind, Noah lit a hunger in me I never thought I had.
The wave of anxiety that washed over me when we were visiting the past suddenly disappeared, and I felt wild. Wild and careless.
We were powerless, going through life the way the Oracles wanted, being used by everyone without our own consent. But.
But despite all this, we didn't die. We were still alive, and we were still alive together.
Even if this was just a vision made by most likely the Oracles, wanting to show us the truth for a reason we did not know.
As long as we were together, we were invincible. I was supposed to be given these powers to save Noah, and I was now doing it, reminding him of everything we have lived through our bodies and minds' connection. When I will wake up from this dream, when Noah will wake up from his, the angel and demon War will start, but we will not fight it. We choose not to fight.
They gave us powers to make us forget each other and fight for them. And they have failed in doing so. We weren't on anyone's side. We were only on ours.

"There will be no war" , Noah gasped, almost uttering the words inside my mouth. He was too breathless to speak properly. We didn't really have to talk, anymore. Our thoughts were connected, speech was nothing but a waste of time between kisses.
"Yes" , I replied. "We'll refuse to fight, and we'll tell them the whole truth about themselves. The truth about their own deaths."
We didn't want the world to change. We didn't want anything to do with wars and politics and the hunger for power. We only wanted to get back to our normal high school lives. Classmates, lunches, exams, annoying teachers, routine.
"How typical of human beings to be terrified of change" , A voice spoke directly behind us. We hadn't heard anything approaching, we were too engulfed in our thoughts to notice the being creeping in on us, so when it spoke, our bodies jumped in place, our wings reacting before our minds, flying us away from each other in a split second. We were more embarrassed to be watched than scared of the newcomer, for we haven't seen his face yet. As we turned around to face him, we were blinded by a familiar warm light. Our eyelids shut, our arms lifted before our faces. We didn't need to look to recognize who was there.
The Oracles.
"What do you want?" Noah spat, his sharp tongue already back in full gear.
"We apologize for not leaving you many choices throughout your lives. However, we gave you each other, we kept you alive, and that is our objective, from the very beginning. By the time we show you the full truth, all that you have ever known will be lost. All that you have ever lived will be forgotten. You want to be together? So be it."

The Oracles were speaking so fast I couldn't register the meaning of their words. Their appearance had an effect on me worse than seeing Belleth himself. I knew it, from an instinct of survival I was granted a long time ago, that things were about to become a lot more terrifying than they once were.
Before I could scream Noah's name, the blinding light intensified, then darkness followed suit, like a really loud screen suddenly switching off, leaving a deafening silence behind.

And then, we were no more.
