Kachunk. Kachunk.

The rhythmic sound made Athena stop dead in her tracks.. She would recognize the sound of metal against marble everywhere. Not wanting to be anywhere near it she decided to move on and quicken her pace. Her brain chose exactly that moment to remind her of the irony in that action. After all, she had done it before and where had that left her?

Athena entered her brother’s forge. Surely he would be interested in the new design she had created for a shield. His craftsmanship would certainly do it justice. With a small, reserved smile on her face she approached Hephaestus.

“Thena” He greeted her.

“To what do I owe your visit?”

The god of the forges took off his welding goggles and gave her a gentle smile, but it did not reach his eyes. In fact there was something else hiding in his bright orange pupils, but Athena wasn’t quite sure what it was. Greed perhaps? Though that didn’t seem entirely right. It sent a shiver down her spine, but the wisdom goddess decided to ignore that. Her shield, that’s what she came for.

“I come to you with a request for a shield.”

“That so? Let’s take a look at it then.”

Like countless times before Hephaestus led Athena to one of the working benches lining the walls. She placed her drawings on the bench and he examined them thoroughly. At first nothing seemed wrong, everything happened as it always did. Hephaestus grumbled in approval at seeing the design of the shield. The owl on the shield, slightly raised above the rest of the metal piece, lined with leather on the inside.

“Very impressive indeed.” The son of Hera muttered to himself, pretending to think about it.

It really was an impressive shield and he was sure with his craftsmanship it would make its wearer invincible on the battlefield, though his thoughts were elsewhere. They were with a certain gray eyed goddess next to him. Today was the day. He could feel it.

The god of the forges took a step closer to the woman next to him. Athena gave him a slightly confused look, but she stayed where she was. He could feel her sharp eyes following his every move. The wisdom goddess herself felt on edge. Her gut told her Hephaestus was stepping into her personal space and this was as close as he could be.

However he shuffled closer still. The wisdom goddess cleared her throat and took a step to the side herself. She hoped it would make it clear to him that she didn’t want him this close. Sadly for her, it didn’t. While still pretending to be inspecting the drawings, Hephaestus kept moving closer, up to the point where his arm brushed Athena’s. It seemed to send an electrical current through her body and not in a pleasant way.

“Forgive me, I’d prefer more space.” Athena said, taking yet another step to the side.

Either the god didn’t hear her or he chose not to hear it. He turned towards her and moved closer again, taking a hold of her right wrist.

“Where are you going? We’re not done with your shield yet are we?”

Hephaestus’ eyes glinted as he tried to pull her closer. The wisdom goddess resisted, but the god of the forges wasn’t exactly the weak type. Suddenly it clicked inside Athena’s head. It wasn’t greed she had seen in his eyes earlier. No, it was desire and lust.
