Chapter Fifty-one | Back To the Past

—"ALL RIGHT. We have a plan. Six Stones, three teams, one shot." Steve said. And like some slow-motion scenes in the movies, the group all walked toward the machine with the suits designed specifically for this. "Five years ago, we lost. All of us. We lost friends. We lost family. We lost part of ourselves."

"Today, we have a chance to take it all back. You know your teams. You know your missions. Get the stones. Get them back." Steve explained as they all stood in a circle. "One round-trip each. No mistakes... no do-overs. Most of us are going somewhere we know. That doesn't mean we should know what to expect. Be careful. Look out for each other. This is the fight of our lives... and we're gonna win. Whatever it takes." He and Tony nodded at each other. "Good luck."

"He's pretty good at that." Rocket said.

"Right?" Both Scott and Eve agreed.

"All right. You heard the man. Stroke those keys, Jolly Green." Tony said.

"Trackers engaged." Bruce told them.

Rocket looked at Clint who held a tiny version of the ship in his hand. "You promise to bring that back in one piece, right?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, I'll do my best." He nodded at him.

"As promises go, that was pretty lame." Bruce came walking over and stood where everyone else was. He clapped his hands together.

"See ya in a minute." Nat smiled at Eve.

"See ya in a minute." Eve repeated smiling at the woman who was like her big sister. The helmets soon appeared on their heads and soon they all fell through and traveled back in time.

The group appeared on the... very destroyed street. Cars were broken, random pieces of metal laying everywhere, buildings are partially broken, and fire. As well as those flying creatures she saw when she was 16. the suits vanished and revealed their superhero suits. Captain America, Ant-man, and Spider-woman while Tony and Bruce were in normal clothes.

Eve looked down at her new suit. Tony had remembered to give her it a few months after he got back from space. It was like Peter's new-ish one except in the colours she usually had.

"All right, we all have our assignments." Steve said. "Two stones uptown, one stone down. Stay low. Keep an eye on the clock." There was a thud and they all turned to see the Hulk shouting and practically making sure a creature would never see the light of day ever again.

Eve watched as another ran away in fear then she slowly turned to Bruce in shock. He made a face of embarrassment. "Maybe smash a few things along the way." Steve told him.

"I think it's gratuitous, but whatever." Bruce said as he ripped the tank top off of his torso. "You coming, Eve?"

"Of course." Eve followed him, making sure to stay quite hidden while Bruce tried to be angry and break things. It didn't exactly work.

The brunette swung herself on top of the building, followed by Bruce. He landed and went to open the door before a voice echoed. "I'd be careful going that way. We just had the floors waxed."

The two walked around to face the woman who spoke. "Yeah, I'm looking for Doctor Strange."

"You're about five years too early. Stephen Stange is currently performing surgery about 20 blocks that way." She pointed in a direction. "What do you want from him?"

"That, actually." Bruce pointed to the thing around the Ancient One's neck.

"Ah! I'm afraid not."

"Sorry," Bruce walked closer and so did Eve. "but I wasn't asking."

"You don't want to do this."

"Ah, you're right, I don't. But I need that stone... and I don't have time to debate it." Bruce went to grab the stone before it was almost like his soul was pushed from his body. Eve watched as his body fell to the floor.

The Ancient One looked at her making Eve take the mask down from her face. "Please, don't do that shit to me." She pointed at the floating Bruce and the knocked-out body of Hulk. The Ancient One looked at her confused. "What?"

The Ancient One hummed while looking at Eve. The Brunette felt something in her mind, it was slightly painful. But it was like a flashback of some man in her mind as well as some redhead.

"Eve?" Bruce called. She shook her head and looked back at the Ancient One.

"Let's start over, shall we?" The Ancient One said.

The Body of the Hulk had been placed on a sunchair with a hat over his face while Bruce begged the Ancient One to help them while Eve was questioning who those people were. "I'm sorry, I can't help you, Bruce, Eve. If I give up the Time Stone to help your reality, I'm dooming my own."

"With all due respect, all right... I'm not sure science really supports that." The three all stopped after Bruce said this and the Ancient one sent a glowing line between them all.

"The Infinity Stones create what you experience as the flow of time. Remove one of the stones..." The Ancient One pushed away one of the stones that flowed on the line she created. "and that flow splits. Now, this may benefit your reality... but my new one, not so much. In this new branch reality... without our chief weapon against the forces of darkness... our world would be overrun. Millions will suffer. So, tell me, Doctor."

Even though the word wasn't meant for her, that word seemed to bring pain to her head. "Can your science prevent all that?"

"No... but we can erase it. Because once we're done with the stones... we can return each one to its own timeline... at the moment it was taken. So, chronologically... in that reality... it never left." Bruce explained, watching as the black line vanished. The Ancient One walked slightly away.

"Yes, but you're leaving out the most important part. In order to return the stones, you have to survive."

"We will. I will. I promise." Bruce walked toward the Ancient one while Eve stayed back with the pain in her mind. It was like it was digging through memories that she didn't know happened.

"I can't risk this reality on a promise. It's the duty of the Sorcerer Supreme to protect the Time Stone." The Ancient One told him.

"then why the hell did strange give it away?" The Ancient One's face fell.

"What did you say?"

"Strange. He gave it away. He gave it to Thanos."

"Willingly?"

"Yes." There was a small silence.

"Why?"

"I have no idea. Maybe he made a mistake. Eve, do you know why he gave it away?" Bruce looked at the woman who didn't respond. "Eve?"

"Or I did." The Ancient One spoke up. She twisted her hand and the body of Hulk came flying back over and Bruce re-entered his body. Opening up the thing which held the Stone, she carefully the Time Stone from it. "Strange is meant to be the best of us."

"So, he must've done it for a reason." Bruce finished.

"I fear you might be right." The Ancient one placed it in his hand.

"Thank you." Bruce thanked as he placed his hands together.

"I'm counting on you, Bruce. We all are." The Ancient One spoke before looking at Eve. "Your friend, she's not supposed to be here. She will learn what I mean in the future, now, you must go."
